Miracles of Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa Sallam)

Allah (Subhaanahu wa ta’ala) bestowed the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) with a number of miracles. I have enlisted some of them below.

1. The Holy Qur’an is the living miracle bestowed by Allah upon Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) and this, Allah’s Book, was revealed to him through the Ruh-ul-Qudus (Jibra’eel (a.s.)). Today 1400 years have passed and nobody has been able to change a single letter or produce its imitation, as it is said in the Qur’an in Surah Al Hijr.

Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’ân) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). (Surah Al-Hijr : 9)

The basic theme of the Surah is that no heavenly Scripture can approach the Qur’an in beauty of diction and style and in the grandeur of its contents. It is a revealed Scripture par excellence. It stands unequalled and unrivalled in every respect. Its beauties and good qualities are so many and so varied that even disbelievers on occasions are forced to confess that they possess nothing like it and wish that they too had possessed a Scripture like it. In spite of this confession on their part, they do not see their way to accept it and do not realize that by their refusal to accept the Qur’an they would be deprived of truth and would draw upon themselves the displeasure and punishment of God.

Also the statement of the Prophet (may Allah’s blessings be upon him): “Before me, every Prophet was given a miracle and they practised it during their lifetime: e.g., ‘Isa (Jesus) used to cure the sick and make the dead alive, etc., Musa (Moses) was given the stick etc., and I have been given the permanent miracle of the Qur’an till the Hour is established, so I hope that my followers will be more in number than all the other Messengers’ as my miracle will last till the Day of Resurrection, and it is a Glorious Book; when anyone reads it, even if he is a pagan, etc., he is convinced that it is produced by none but by the Creator of the heavens and the earth.”

2. The splitting of the moon: Narrated Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Makkans requested Allah’s Messenger (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) to show them a miracle, so he showed the splitting of the moon.

“The Last Hour draws near, and the moon is split asunder!” (Quran 54:1)

The splitting of the moon is confirmed through eye-witness testimony transmitted not only through an unbroken chain of reliable scholars but through many unbroken chains of reliable scholars (Mutawatir Hadith). It is impossible that it could be false.

The splitting of the moon was also witnessed by the King of Malabar in India. King Chakrawati Farmas is recorded to have seen the moon split.

A group of Muslim merchant’s passing by Malabar on their way to China spoke to the king about how Allah (Subhaanahu wa ta’ala) had supported the Arabian Prophet (may Allah’s blessings be upon him) with the miracle of splitting of the moon. The shocked king said he had seen it with his own eyes as well.

He depustised his son in his place before he left his kingdom to meet the Prophet (may Allah’s blessings be upon him). He accepted Islam at the hands of Muhammad (may Allah’s blessings be upon him). While on his way back to India he passed away and was buried in the port city of Zafar, Yemen.

A Muslim, Malik bin Dinar, continued to Kodungallure, and built the first, and India’s oldest, mosque in the area in 629 CE which still exists today.

Cheraman Juma Masjid

The Indian sighting and the meeting of the Indian king with Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s blessings be upon him) is also reported by Muslim sources. Ibn Kathir mentions the splitting of the moon was reported in parts of India. Also, the books of hadith have documented the arrival of the Indian king and his meeting the Prophet (may Allah’s blessings be upon him). Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) stated:

“The Indian king gifted the Prophet with a jar of ginger. The companions ate it piece by piece. I took a bite as well.”

3. The crying of the stem of the date-palm tree in the Prophet’s (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) Masjid: Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) used to deliver his Khutba while leaning against a trunk of a date-palm tree. When he had the pulpit made and used it instead, the trunk started crying and the Prophet (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) went to it, rubbing his hand over it (to stop its crying).

4. The flowing of the water from among the fingers of Allah’s Messenger:

Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): I was with the Prophet and the time for the ‘Asr prayer became due. We had no water with us except a little which was put in a vessel and was brought to the Prophet (may Allah’s blessing be upon him). He (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) put his hand ito it and spread out his fingers and then said, “Come along! Hurry up! All those who want to perform ablution. The blessing is from Allah.” I saw the water gushing out from his fingers. So the people performed the ablution and drank, and I tried to drink more of that water (beyond my thirst and capacity), for I knew that it was a blessing.

The subnarrator said : I asked Jabir, “How many persons were you then?” He replied, ” “We were one thousand four hundred men.” (Salim said: Jabir said – 1500).

5. The Prophet’s (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) meals used to glorify Allah while he ate, and this glorification was heard by the companions of the Prophet (may Allah’s blessing be upon him).

6. Stones used to greet the Prophet (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) whenever he passed by through the lanes of Makkah.

7. The throwing out of a dead body of a Christian by the earth: Narrated Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): There was a Christian who embraced Islam and read Surah Al-Baqarah and Aal-Imran and he used to write the revelation for the Prophet (may Allah’s blessing be upon him). Later on he reverted to Christianity and used to say, “Muhammad knows nothing but what I have written for him.” Then Allah caused him to die and the people buried him but in the morning they found that the earth had thrown out his body. They said, “This is the deed of Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) and his companions. They have opened the grave of our companion and took his body out because he ran away from them,” so they again dug the grave deeper for him, but in the morning they again found that the earth had thrown the body out. They said, “This is a deed of Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) and his companions.” So they dug a third grave for him as deep as they could, but in the morning they found that the earth had thrown the body out. Then they believed what had befallen him, was not done by mankind, and they had to leave the body on the ground.

8. The screening (shading) by the trees, for the Prophet (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) to answer the call of nature.

9. The rising of water in the well at Hudaibiya after it had dried.

10. The increase in the amount of dates in the garden of Jabir bin ‘Abdullah after the Prophet (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) went round the heaps of dates and invoked Allah for His Blessings.

11. Speaking of the wolf: It has been written that a wolf also spoke to one of the companions of the Prophet (Allah’s blessings be upon him) near Medina (narrated in Musnad of Ahmad, Vol.3, Page 83, Musnad Abi Saeed Al-Khudri). Narrated Abi Saeed Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): (While a shepherd was amongst his sheep) suddenly a wolf attacked a sheep and took it away. The shepherd chased the wolf and back the sheep. The wolf sat on its tail and addressed the shepherd saying: “Be afraid of Allah, you have taken the provision from me which Allah gave me.” The shepherd said: “What an amazing thing! A wolf sitting on its tail speaks to me in the language of a human being.” The wolf said: “Shall I tell you something more amazing than this? There is Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him)(the Messenger of Allah) in Yathrib (Medina) informing the people about the news of the past.” Then the shepherd proceeded (towards Medina) driving his sheep till he entered Medina (city), cornered his sheep to one side and came to Allah’s Messenger (Muhammad) (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) and informed the whole story.

Allah’s Messenger (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) ordered for the proclamation of a congregational prayer, then he (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) came out and asked the shepherd to inform the people (about his story) and he informed them. Then Allah’s Messenger (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) said: “He (the shepherd) has spoken the truth . By Him (Allah) in Whose Hands my soul is, the Day of Resurrection will not be established till beasts of prey speak to the human beings, and the stick lash and the shoe-laces of a person speaks to him and his thigh informs him about his family as to what happened to them after him.”

12. Al-Isra Wal Mi’raj: The Ascent of the Prophet (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) to the heavens.

“Exalted is He who took His Servant [Prophet Muhammad] by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (Quran 17:1)

“So will you dispute with him over what he saw? And he certainly saw him in another descent at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary – near it is the Garden of Refuge (Paradise) – when there covered the Lote Tree that which covered (it). The sight (of the Prophet) did not swerve, nor did it transgress (its limit). He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.” (Quran 53:12-18)

13. Healing the Sick

Abdullah ibn Ateek (may Allah be pleased with him) broke his leg and Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) healed it by wiping his hand over it. Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said it was as if nothing had happened to it! The person who witnessed the miracle was another companion, Bara’ ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him).

During the expedition of Khyber, Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) healed the painful eyes of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) in front of a whole army.

14. Answering of prayers.

The people were struck with famine during the time of Muhammad. A man stood up when Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) was delivering the weekly sermon on Friday, and said, ‘O Messenger of God, our wealth has been destroyed and our children are starving. Pray to God for us.’ Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) raised his hands in prayer.

Those in attendance testify that that the moment he lowered his hands after praying, clouds began to build like mountains!

By the time he stepped down of his pulpit, rain was dripping from his beard! It rained the whole week till next Friday!

The same man stood up again, complained this time, ‘O Messenger of God, our buildings are destroyed, and our property is drowned, pray to God for us!’

Muhammad (may Allah’s blessing be upon him) raised his hands and prayed, ‘O God, (let it rain) around us, but not on us.’

Those in attendance testify that the clouds withdrew in the direction he pointed, the city of Medina was surrounded by clouds, but there were no clouds over it!

(And many more such incidents)

All the incidents have been reported in Ahadith of either of the two Saheeh or the Musnad of Imam Ahmad.
