What the Dupatta should really cover ….

A lot of girls cover their heads during the Azan with a dupatta, but I don’t know if that is a cultural thing or a religious requirement. They only cover a portion of their heads though. It looks like they are only trying to cover the back of their head! Some girls wear the dupatta on their head habitually, but again, they reveal more hair than they conceal. The dupatta looks like it will slide off any second!

I think the dupatta was generally designed to be worn to cover the…ahem, but a lot of girls wear it around their necks. It has turned into a fashion accessory rather than a requirement. For others, it is purely cultural.

Even while covering the head during the Azan, the dupatta must still be covering the…you know what. Some women cover their head during the Azan in a manner where they end up revealing what really needs to be covered.

Alright. I had assumed that “achchoo (sneezing)” part was already covered in clothes so I mentioned only the hair.

    SL to answer your question
The reason for some Hindu women covering their heads seems to be cultural. The Vedic Hinduism does not prescribe anything specific regarding this cultural values and religion often go together in any society. The custom of covering the head might be older that the religion itself.

You might have also observed that this custom is more prevalent in Northern and Western India but not in Southern India.

@ Adnan: if you really think Taliban are serving the cause of Muslims, please go to a psychiatrist. You urgently need one.

@Shakir. This is what you beleive. Its a long story. I worked with Talibaan in the Russia War and When America Attacked Afghanistan. So, I believe that i know Talibaan bette than you. But Its true that some people making them Talibaan and killing the persons are Black Water and CIA agents.
Please you people dont blame Talibaan for those. We are fighting just to fulfil Jihaad. Some other things are like that the Pushtoons are the type of people who must have to take revenge. When the Drone Attack kill the Pashtoon children and women and then the Pashtoons try to take revenge the Pakistan Army and Government protects the US and then the anger of the Pashtoons changes towards the Pakistan Governement and Army. They fight back with the Army and some people think that they are Talibaans.
Remember that the Talibaans are the protector of Islam all over the world. This is the only cause they have. So, please dont blame them caz it will damage the cause of Islam. Talibaan fight for Islam, for YOU and for ME, they are not the enemy of Muslims as you saw when Martyred Gen. Zia was the president of Talibaan, how are the relationship of Afghanistan and Pakistan. We Talibaan Loves Pakistan and Pakistani Muslims, but tell our slave Government not to obey the orders from Washington.

@James. I appriciate you, but i think you dont know the teaching of our Prophet (PBUH). Our Islam do not make the tell us to make the women like slaves but teached us to respect the women either she is your mother, sister, daughter or wife, and also give respect to others women.
The the matter of Duppata or covering of a woman in our islam is like that the women can only expose herself infront of her husband not in front of other men. So, our Islam teaches the women to cover themselves while they are outside or in relatives meetings. Our Islam not only tells us to give respect to our women but to all other women may be your family women or any non-muslim women.
I also appritiate you that you think positively. May Almighty ALLAH blessed us and protect us from the bad things.

@ Hend: I’ve noticed some Hindu and Sikh women also covering their heads, especially in the presence of their elders, at funerals, etc. Does Hinduism (I’m assuming you’ve a Hindu) prescribe this also?

@Hend: Hair should be covered if everything else is covered, and covered properly. There is no point in covering the hair and revealing the..achchoo (sneezing).

I am not a scholar in these matters but according to me, it should cover the hair because hair is not covered already by any other garment. Some girls who wear it around the neck are additionally covering the portion around the neck or the necklace areas. Rest is already covered so there is no issue, is there?

The dupatta is not a religious garment nor is its exact use and coverage areas prescribed by religion. What the religion may prescribe are the general guidelines about dressing which people follow by making use of dupatta or other forms of wear.

@Shakir: Understood. Ha, probably a lot of them quite drool over the idea, too. You could say that people in the West have more opportunities to shop around for a mate, and more thoroughly, but dating is expensive, time-consuming and nerve-wracking, and it’s far more satisfactory to find one you get along with and settle down with her. Women feel the same way. True, we’re a lot more relaxed about sex here, but sex is only a part of the mating game, and widespread promiscuity is a myth, except for some of the young who are shopping around, but will desist once they marry.

Many people in the West have the equally ill-informed assumption that women in Islam must be miserable by comparison. That could not possibly be true, or Islam would not have lasted 1600 years and be followed by a third of mankind.

Sexual transgressors probably exist in roughly equal numbers in our two societies. We all understand the difference between grapes and “stolen grapes,” don’t we? 🙂 Argument aside, I do believe that reality justifies itself.

@ James: in our society, most illiterate men have been brought up to believe that Western women as well as Muslim women (usually in cities) who don’t cover themselves from head to toe are very promiscuous.
