What the Dupatta should really cover ….

A lot of girls cover their heads during the Azan with a dupatta, but I don’t know if that is a cultural thing or a religious requirement. They only cover a portion of their heads though. It looks like they are only trying to cover the back of their head! Some girls wear the dupatta on their head habitually, but again, they reveal more hair than they conceal. The dupatta looks like it will slide off any second!

I think the dupatta was generally designed to be worn to cover the…ahem, but a lot of girls wear it around their necks. It has turned into a fashion accessory rather than a requirement. For others, it is purely cultural.

Even while covering the head during the Azan, the dupatta must still be covering the…you know what. Some women cover their head during the Azan in a manner where they end up revealing what really needs to be covered.

    @LTG Khan: Thank you, Sir! (Ha-a-and –SaLUTE! 🙂 )

    @Kashif: Well, y’know, m’lad, it’s about, ahem, boys an’ girls, really now, ain’t it? Y’know–ROMANCE! Yee-haw! ALLAHU AKBAR!

    @Mohamed: Thanks. It just hit me like a ton of bricks in the shower a couple of weeks ago, and a whole lot of other things became clear, too, that I’m frankly not ready to tell anyone. I quite doubt that I’m the first to whom it has occurred, and I’m no religious scholar at all. Interesting you found some supportive references so quickly.

    I don’t equate semi-revealing clothes, or even nudity under some circumstances, with immorality. Forcing one’s will on others is immoral by my lights. God gave us, men and women, too, brains to make choices, and that implies the freedom to do so, as far as I’m concerned.

    @Adnan: Brother Adnan, it has taken me eleven hours to write this, which I tell you as a friend, and I hope you take to heart: Get out of the Taliban and go home. That is your brightened way.

    Best of luck.

    @James,
    I like your approach of unifying us on the commonality of God. No doubt Elah of the Bible and Allah of the Qur’an are the same (see this link , also check Jesus call god by the name “Alah” in the movie “Passion of the Christ” )

    Therefore we find the same god has prevented exhibition of nakedness and prescribed covering-up for women in both the Bible (1 Corinthians 11: 5-6, Matthew 5:27-8, Genesis 24:65, Isaiah 3:23) and the final revelation the Qur’an. I hope you understand and agree the common ground between our beliefs of dressing modestly. Governments across the world attempt to prevent crime by preventing actions that would lead to a crime, similarly our common god Allah has prevented immodest dressing and lewdness that are a cause of many criminal actions especially against women in the west. I hope these governments especially those in the west also take the pre-emptive steps of prescribing hijab to reduce the crime rate against women. Hope you too see God’s wisdom and help spread the word against immorality and nudity.

    @Dear James. I being a Muslim and the worshiper of our GOD believe one thing that to cover Hijaab for a woman is the order of ALLAH.
    Think like that if some scientict invent something like robot, He knows every thing about the robot not you and me caz he created the Robot and he know what are the positive and negative things and what are the advantages and disadvantages in the Robot.
    We all Know that Almighty ALLAH created the Human being and he knows how this creature lives perfectly and He gaves us manules e.g Bibal, Taurat, Zaboor, Injeer and Holy Quran to read and obey to live perfectly.
    So, my friend we would like to obey the rules and orders created by ALLAH to live a successful life and the life after the death.
    May ALLAH shows us all the brightened way.

    @Adnan: Thank you, and I appreciate your use of English; it seems to be becoming a force that could finally pull us all together. You are quite understandable to me.

    It seems to me that you, too, are a thinking man, and if you are old enough to have fought the Russians you’ve had plenty of experience and time, and reasons, to ponder and to arrive at some higher conclusions.

    Has it ever occurred to you that He whom the Christians call GOD, and ALLAH of Islam, and all the other Names by which HE is called by various peoples of Earth is ONE and the SAME? That there is but one GOD and HE is the ALMIGHTY of all of us, red and yellow, black, brown and white and all between and everything that lives and breathes? That’s what my Book says; doesn’t yours say the same thing? And that His different Messengers were sent to our different places in our far pasts because we were scattered and various, but we no longer are?

    I think we’re wasting a lot of time and energy with our squabbling and bickering over what to me are trivial matters of style, missing the point because, out of our ignorant pride, we are dwelling on our differences, which really don’t mean much, and ignoring our similarities, which are profound. We can’t see the forest for the trees–we are all God’s children. HE already gave our Prophets the rulebooks, which in spirit say the same things.

    Dupatta, hijaab, abaya, business suit, blue-jeans, bikini or bare-butt nudity–what real difference does it make? The important part is what is in our hearts and minds, not the clothing we wear or don’t wear. Dressed or undressed, one can be respectful and considerate, or selfish and thoughtless. One’s neck is under one’s own control, and anyone can stare or look away. If a woman wants to be looked at, she’ll let you know; if she doesn’t want to be looked at, she’ll let you know that, too.

    While I agree with Yusha on both facts covering the bosom as well as all of hair on the head is a requirement in Islam that is not taken serious by many sisters. Though he feels only the bosom is important, lets emphasise following the ruling in its entirety is essential.

    Regarding the beard all 4 madhabs (Shafi’i, Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali) have ruled the beard is wajib (obligatory). there is clear injunction from the prophet to grow beard and trim mustaches. There never was a situation to punish for not growing beards as it was a common practice, additionally Islam required trimming of mustaches. Moreover Muslims never would never disobey the messenger (pubh) on such established code of appearance. Until the recent centuries beards have always been a part and pride of manhood.

    @Muhammad Yusha. You have a very good name Yousha. Its not a matter of forcing people. where were Pakistani Talibaans before Pakistan and Americans became friends against the so called war of terrorism. Talibaans never support forced Islam. I think you never visited Afghanistan when Talibaans Government was there. I you visited, you should never think of Talibaan like that. Its is only the propaganda of west against Talibaan.
    The Pakistani Talibaans are the birth of Militry Operations in Waziristan. You should have to know that there are more than 25 groups of Talibaan in Sawat and Waziristan. There problem is that there children and women are being killed by US and Pakistani militry.
    Dear Yousha we have to obey the law by force created by the Government like red light stop on the road. and when there is a matter of order created by Almighty ALLAH to cover women to say prayer and others, we take these lightly.
    Please think and dont blame Talibaan for that.

    @Adnan: Can you tell me where it is mentioned that people can use force on others in Islam? Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) never forced any man to keep a beard or a woman to wear a burka. And he certainly didn’t beat anyone for not following Islam. How would you feel if some lunatic started beating your male family members for not keeping a beard or your female family members for not wearing a burka?

    @Hend: Breasts are already covered with a kameez, but they are clearly visible unless covered with a dupatta. Covering the hair with a dupatta and revealing the breasts in the process is pointless. The whole point is that women need to pay attention to what needs to be covered first, and get their “priorities” in order.
