What the Dupatta should really cover ….

A lot of girls cover their heads during the Azan with a dupatta, but I don’t know if that is a cultural thing or a religious requirement. They only cover a portion of their heads though. It looks like they are only trying to cover the back of their head! Some girls wear the dupatta on their head habitually, but again, they reveal more hair than they conceal. The dupatta looks like it will slide off any second!

I think the dupatta was generally designed to be worn to cover the…ahem, but a lot of girls wear it around their necks. It has turned into a fashion accessory rather than a requirement. For others, it is purely cultural.

Even while covering the head during the Azan, the dupatta must still be covering the…you know what. Some women cover their head during the Azan in a manner where they end up revealing what really needs to be covered.

I’ve got all of your views and good to know you re all atleast close to the religion …. hijab , dupptah or whatever else ….. basics in Islam how to cover the wits * hiden parts * but here we followin region not religion , I even ve seen jews using hijab , & we shouldn’t consider dupatta as hijab , is it because we all ve got ancestors from sub-continent so they adopted the both stuff and let us here discussin abt it ….

@ Shayma: Sister, I have similar feelings for Pakistan, I join you in your prayers- ameen

@ Yusha: Hijab is not the dress of any tradition or custom. It does not mean “veil” as many translate, rather it means “to veil” according to criteria laid by Allah SWT & his messenger SWS. The 6 criteria can be met by the shalwar khameez or in fact even the saree worn in India.

What Shayma is pointing at, is the wearing the shalwar khameez in the manner of the traditional hindus who do not have any such criteria to follow and can modify it over time. If Shayma or any Muslim who cares for the rulings of Allah SWT and his rasool SAWS would see a sister wearing the shalwar khameez confirming to the criteria of hijab, we would only appreciate.

@Shayma: Since you didn’t answer two very simple questions I asked you, I’m left to assume that you don’t know what you are talking about. So much for Mohamed’s appreciation of your “participation.”

Hend: “Already a lot of people are arguing here that the ‘all covering’ Hijab is a cultural practice from Arabia”. You’re right. Muslims are living in practically all countries on the planet, yet the Hijab (“burqa”) has come from the Arabs. Allah has asked Muslims to dress modestly (decently). The shalwar kameez worn by Pakistani and Indian women (with a “chador” or “dupatta” draped over the chest and head meets this criterion. I’ve been to the holy places in Saudi Arabia and I’ve seen women (including my wife) performing religious rites in this dress (the “burqa” or “abaya” is not necessary).

One factual error in your statement

“but because before the muslims go to pakistan hindu were there so the muslims inherit the hindu tradition”

You should say …before Islam reached the region that is Pakistan, Hindu religion was already being practiced by the populations settled there…..

This is to clarify that ancestors of people who are practicing Islam in Pakistan today did not necessarily come from outside the region. The culture and languages practiced by them were already there. The traditions they have inherited are from their ancestors and are not necessarily ‘Hindu traditions’ because culture and languages came long before any religion.

The religion does modify culture to some extent as the time goes but we must understand the difference between the two otherwise there is a danger of mistaking cultural practices as religious practices. Already a lot of people are arguing here that the ‘all covering’ Hijab is a cultural practice from Arabia.

@Shayma: If a woman does not wear Shalwar Kameez then what is she supposed to wear? And do you have any proof that Shalwar Kameez is of Hindu origin?

actually dupatta is a indian thing. but because before the muslims go to pakistan hindu were there so the muslims inherit the hindu tradition. no pakistani perhps will admit it but is a fact. i am half pakistani but i dont live in pakistan. i was born in another country and Alhamdulillah for this. because i realise many things which some pakistani dont want to accept. and dupatta and hijab have nothing to do one with another. and many other pakistani traditions have nothing to do with islam unfortunatly. because pakistan is a islamic country is a country were according with the statistics 99% of people are parcticing islam in the good way. but i dont see this. even in my family. and i dont know why is difficult for the muslims there to follow islam and not some hindu traditions. hijab is to cover complet hair and……. all the body. not half hair and at the next step all ur hair will become uncovered as dupatta is doing. so for my pakistani sisters, please leave aside all the traditions and customs of this country and look in the Quran and see what Allah says. and follow that. because in the end we will go to Him. and we will answer in front of Him not in front of the society.

    Assalamu alaykum
