Sovereign Pakistani Parliament Cannot Convict Musharraf

Last week was some how overshadowed by the magnitude of confrontation witnessed in the National Assembly, after nearly a break of one decade. Where Ch. Nisar and Haider Abbas were seen holding on to each other by the horns evidently, in reality the 342 member parliament has sealed its fate for years to come. Once again by themselves the politicians and political forces have given a vacuum first for a convict to escape and secondly another culprit to emerge some time soon.

I don’t know but my ears get sick of listening to the manifesto presented before the masses after the elections last year. It seems like a new breed of politicians have evolved, bathed from the holy waters of democracy, when all we heard was that “national reconciliation” and “parliament sovereignty” as the talk of the town. In the books of wisdom new additions were made that no matter how much oppression you are subjected to, democracy will fight it out. Amazing!

Mr. P.M, honorable Gilani has so softly rung the defeat bells for parliament in terms of Musharraf trial by saying that Article 6 will be an option if it is possible and “lets do the doable” are indeed not the words which one would like to hear from a man, who holds the key to the most sovereign institute in the country. Any way, especially the idealist opposition in the shape of PML-N was day dreaming until now if they had in mind that Mush will stand trial, as far the current time is concerned. Whether a foreign hand or a hidden hand, simply written the lack of “will” is the real factor.

But at the same time one is also amazed by the priorities in the mind of our political players. Where nation is still searching for answer to questions like have they overcome the Taliban dilemma, whether we will spend the next year again without adequate electricity or will there be any flour and sugar left for the consumer, the establishment has the other way around. In terms of reconciliation we have a visible answer that what they really mean by it. One still sees Balochistan as neglected as ever, still a fight is under way for the prized throne of Punjab and now Mr. Holbrook will be the person to decide the fate of local bodies’ government in Pakistan.

What we want from them is that for once stop playing with words and be honest to the nation what you really care. Instead of sorting out what is “doable”, it will be better that from now on do what you can and accept what you cannot. The whole crisis seems to be a personal feud or clash between two individuals, in which they always find a playing field to carry it on. We know very well what has already been settled in terms of drones, at least its still time to stop what is coming in the shape of American colonization of Pakistan (the new consulate in Islamabad and 7,000 marines).

It was well understood that Mush has secured a safe exit before he left the place and he has not left any space for any further action. Now this can have only two implications i.e. it was unavoidable to give him this passage or in some way the present establishment has followed the trend by which they have kept an option for themselves open, in case the time arrives and use the same path. This action has left the 160 million Pakistanis once again depending upon the shoulders of Supreme Court to answer the call, as the corridors of power have simply stopped exercising the authority.

We are worried that 0.7 million pak army wants 7000 US army,, this will be the last and final mistake the leadership of Pakistan and US will commit…..boots on soil will be a timebomb for the Taliban to gather support and inroad and the decline in their autrhority will be back with a bang…..much louder than one thought at the Pentagon………………nyways no hard feelings from you as its our own who leadership responsible for our production…………nyways its pretty different in Pakistan interms of alien army

masses hold the power,, bt remember that they can be mislead very easily,,
Where the French crowned themselves by briging the age of popular will (1789 Revolution) just a decade later they were again out to elect Napoleon as the new emperor,,
whether people welcomed or not, he broke his oath of service,, and any thing thats starts with a evil cannot produce a good deed,, so was the career of Musharaff

I saw Ol’ Mushy on American TV several times 3 or 4 years ago, when the Taliban thing in the border areas was in the forefront of the news, and it appeared that US operations in Afghanistan were going to run over into Pakistan, and it was time for Pakistan to weigh in on the matter officially.

Believe me, Mushy came across very impressively here. He was very clear about the fact that Pakistan stood for Pakistan first, middle and last, and that any operations in the border areas would have to be jointly conducted with mutual approval. He was concise, firm and unwavering without being in any way offensive, and got my respect instantly as a fellow who seemed as good as his word. A less resolute posture, I think, would have given the US MORE to worry about.

I have little idea what indignation or transgressions he created among the rest of your people and leadership–I gather quite a lot–but I think the fact that your restored leaders are having a hard time finding the will to nail him is revealing. I suspect he put his iron hand around them because he knew that this was a moment requiring solidarity, action and no time for argument.

My Dad had a half-joke about how to establish the IQ of a group: Divide the IQ of the dumbest member by the number of people in the group.

I think the 7000 US Marines now in Pakistan are probably going to be side-by-side with your own Army, doing something fun and soldiery together. It doesn’t sound like an invasion force to me. 700,000 would be a different matter altogether. You all will probably have to go a long way out of your way to ever see a US Marine. I used to watch the *Iranian* Air Force training in their fighters in Georgia, US, so a few foreign troops on the ground doesn’t bother me any. Military visits in numbers are done all the time between friendly nations.

What will you get for trying Mush? I hated the man after he dismissed the CJP, but before that he was good for the country. He was a fool not to see that he was getting unpopular. If he’d resigned earlier, instead of hanging on to power until the last moment, at least the public would have thought highly of him. And you must agree that when he removed Nawaz, the people welcomed him.

Actually these politician do not want to close the door for martial law, history is replete with examples when these same politicians collaborated with a military dictator to over throw their political opponents government. How can they try him who came in power through a Deal?
Therefore, Mush trial is just a drama, just to satisfy the masses so that they do not question electricity, sugar, wheat and so many other crises prevailing in the country.

@Hamid: This whole drama gives a sense of deja vu. Politicians escaping, no justice being done. do we still have any expectations from the leeches, erm, i mean politicians? the mush case is just an entertainment episode for the public, you know, some service for the payment (they are unaware of) they make.

Your last paragraph is the answer to the whole drama. 🙂

Musharraf is a hard nut to crack for this parliament. It is not “doable” for them as u said the lack of “will” is the real factor
