Why is the burqa black?

Why is the burqa black?

This question was put to me by a foreign guest when he saw many burqa-clad women in line to buy tickets at the office of an airline. He said that since black absorbs heat, it must be awfully uncomfortable for these women in the hot, sweltering Pakistani summer. So I began to think of a reason for the burqa being black, and a couple of explanations came to mind. The first is that black is associated with the devil in all cultures and religions, and it is well known that the first woman (Eve) was persuaded by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit, after which Adam also did likewise. And among people who are illiterate, women are almost always regarded as agents of the devil, ever ready to persuade men to break the divine laws, like when a woman forces her husband to take bribes to support her extravagant lifestyle. This could be one reason why women in Islamic countries have to wear black burqas.

The other explanation is that black is the colour of mourning. Whenever someone dies, his or her relatives wear black for a number of days, even if they are Europeans or Americans. Widows in western countries also wear black, sometimes for four and half months, similar to Muslim widows observing the period of “iddat”. In Islam of course, we are aware of the wearing of black clothes during Muharram, when Muslims mourn the deaths of the grandson of the holy Prophet (pbuh).

Maybe I’m wrong, and there is another reason for the burqa being black. Perhaps someone who knows can enlighten me on this subject. I eagerly await comments.

What is interesting is the level of passion that is elicited from a pretty benign question of “why are burkas black?”
This is very educational, what I have figured out is:
    1) The responders are pretty dogmatic about their religion
    2) People with other opinions than the responder’s are homosexual tolerant (apparently this is an ultimate insult)
    3) Muslims seem to have different interpretations of the ‘absolute truth’
    4) Everyone seems to know their Koran inside and out. (Frankly, I never did finish the Bible, I waited for the movie).

I glad no one asked why the sexual assault of foreign women in some Islamic countries is greater than 90%. That would really let loose a firestorm of postings that I would not want to be part of!

I think the most simple reason would be that black burqa does not attract undue attention. Any other color would look attractive and the purpose of burqa would not serve. If you do not know the anything abuot the burqa its better to keep quiet. Almost all stupids who have nothing to do wtih burqa or islam tkae it as an opportunity to write maliciously against my religion. Moving around half naked like sluts gets you more compliments and of course shows progressive and independent women.

Desert dwelling peole wear black headdress and loose fitting robes because
‘black’ color absorbs heat away from the body, providing a cooling effect.
Cloth has such a low specific heat, it does not absorb heat from the sun.
Thermal winds in hot climates evaporate moisture from black clothing.
White robes, like in the movie ‘Lawerence of Arabia’ were for photographic
effect to give a ‘Christ like appearance’; also adopted by the dead Osama bin Ladin.

There is nothing against the burqa in this post. The only question that was asked was why it is black. There will always be illiterate people like Haider who can’t read, and are always ready to call other Muslims kafir. What else can be expect from people who follow Arab scholars and love Peace TV (a wahhabi channel).

Haider: I don’t remember favouring homosexuality in any of my writings. Secondly, I have read all the holy books many times and I have found that the burqa is not compulsory in Islam. Thirdly, it is because of people like you (whose mindsets are like those of Stone age people) that Islam is viewed so negatively in the West.

I have already declared a statement months ago about Shakir Lakhani that this old man is anti islamic and sort of atheist, after i had read his post regarding homosexuality in which he was favouring it lol he been trying hard to find bugs in islam and pretends that he is some smart scholar with his own perfect theories LOL Mr.Lakhani you can ask your daughters and sisters to wear hijab other than black one there is no problem at all so dont think so hard. the primay goal of hijab is to cover oneself. i already told this man to go back to Quran and read it and if u dont believe in it then dont call yourself muslim maybe change ur name to Johny Lakhy because hypocrites are far worse than non-muslims.

The burqa is probably black to make it unbearably hot in the sun. Therefore, women won’t be tempted to go outside much which will prevent them from enticing men to rape them.

@ Shakir Lakhani: “why Pakistanis behave as if they are the “guardians” of Islam?”
Wrong statement made once again. Not Pakistanis, Muslims. And not just Muslims of Pakistani but every Muslim should be the guardian of Islam.
Why does this bother you so much?
And I do not believe in terms and deeply religious or moderately religious. Simply put, you either follow all the commands of Islam and or you are not a perfect Muslim. One should always strive to be a better Muslim.
I do not believe that any Muslim woman would advise a sister who doesn’t fully follow the principles of Islam to stay in her house until she dies. She would of course advise her to observe hijab. It is her duty as a Muslim to advise her. In order to protect her modesty. As her well-wisher.

Mr. Lakhani, if a Muslim lady advises a sister to observe hijab, why does it offend you so much?
I am sure if some lady tells another that you would look awesome in a miniskirt etc. that statement would be considered by most people with similar thoughts like yours, as a compliment…

@ Tanya: “there is so many other important issues to be discussed”. O.K., which important issue do you think should be discussed? How about trying to find out why Pakistanis behave as if they are the “guardians” of Islam? Whenever a religious Pakistani Muslim sees another Muslim without a beard, something happens to him and he’s not able to sleep until he’s given a good lecture on why all Muslims should be heavily bearded. Similarly, whenever a deeply religious Pakistani woman sees an unveiled Muslim woman , she immediately lectures everyone present on why every Muslim woman should either cover herself in a burqa or stay inside her house until she dies.
