Why is the burqa black?

Why is the burqa black?

This question was put to me by a foreign guest when he saw many burqa-clad women in line to buy tickets at the office of an airline. He said that since black absorbs heat, it must be awfully uncomfortable for these women in the hot, sweltering Pakistani summer. So I began to think of a reason for the burqa being black, and a couple of explanations came to mind. The first is that black is associated with the devil in all cultures and religions, and it is well known that the first woman (Eve) was persuaded by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit, after which Adam also did likewise. And among people who are illiterate, women are almost always regarded as agents of the devil, ever ready to persuade men to break the divine laws, like when a woman forces her husband to take bribes to support her extravagant lifestyle. This could be one reason why women in Islamic countries have to wear black burqas.

The other explanation is that black is the colour of mourning. Whenever someone dies, his or her relatives wear black for a number of days, even if they are Europeans or Americans. Widows in western countries also wear black, sometimes for four and half months, similar to Muslim widows observing the period of “iddat”. In Islam of course, we are aware of the wearing of black clothes during Muharram, when Muslims mourn the deaths of the grandson of the holy Prophet (pbuh).

Maybe I’m wrong, and there is another reason for the burqa being black. Perhaps someone who knows can enlighten me on this subject. I eagerly await comments.

@Brother Yusha, I accept my mistake in giving a generalised statement but apart from our innocent Mr. Lakhani’s posts i have read one other such post of another author. Nevermind that. But yes that doesn’t mean most authors are like this. Accept my apologies. 🙂

    Salam,
@ Shakir Lakhani. Your posts really amuse me…
Firstly, I follow my religion not to obtain A grades from the Arabs who are in your acquaintanceship. I follow the Religion that Allah has ordered human beings to follow, the religion taught by Rasool Allah (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him).
What do I or those like me and better than me care about human beings’ contempt. Muslims only care about what Islam says, which is what Allah (SWT) says.

“One Arab shaikh is reported to have said to a Pakistani bearded politician, “You Pakistanis act as if Islam originated in Pakistan on 14 August 1947, and that the Holy Koran was revealed in Urdu or Pashto!” ”

My dear sir I am amused by your height of innocence! Islam originated in this very world for all the people of the world. Tell em do you practice this or are your statements naturally always baseless and a waste of words? Islam, Qur’an Hakeem and Sunnah are for everyone to follow. Yalla, now you can quit your fear and start following it!

And for starters like let me give you some points to remember: (a)Islam can never be distorted, those who try to do so end up with their brains being distorted
(b)Allah will judge everyone by their level of taqwa (so come out of that inferiority complex as well)

Lastly, if being literate=Shakir Lakhani…I am vying to be an illiterate and am starting a pro-illiteracy campaign this moment!

@ Momina: There is a huge difference between ‘most authors on this website’ and ‘most authors whose posts I have read.’ Just because you read Shakir’s post and found a lot of mistakes with his opinions on Islam…the rest is understood.

@ Momina: Do you know the contempt with which Arabs regard Pakistani Muslims like you who openly flaunt their religiosity? One Arab shaikh is reported to have said to a Pakistani bearded politician, “You Pakistanis act as if Islam originated in Pakistan on 14 August 1947, and that the Holy Koran was revealed in Urdu or Pashto!” The fact is, Islam has been distorted by our mullahs to suit their own ends. And owing to most Pakistanis being illiterate, the Taliban have been able to brainwash them easily.

    Salam,
@ Shakir Lakhani. lol…Dear Sir please do tell me wher you rpovide ‘your’ English classes. What i do understand from it is one is not supposed to understand things the way they are said.

“So I began to think of a reason for the burqa being black, and a couple of explanations came to mind.” Are these explanation based on facts and truth?

“And among people who are illiterate, women are almost always regarded as agents of the devil… This could be one reason why women in Islamic countries have to wear black burqas.”

If you had any knowledge about this matter you wouldn’t have began thinking for reasons why the burqa is black. Let alone having Islamic knowledge, if you even had ‘modern’ outlook on life, you would have accepted wearing of black burqa as a personal choice. and sir, your request statement strongly goes against you, “I request all writers on this blog to refrain from using religion whenever they can’t explain something properly.”
You mention that women are considered agents of devil among “illiterate” people. Then you give this the reason why in Islamic countries women wear black burqas…!! As in, illiterate=Islamic countries, is that so?

Your second quote that I have included clearly indicates that you consider Muslims (or at least a majority of them) to be illiterate.

If you had real knowledge about this issue why would you have to come up with reasons???

And sir, discussing and understanding and accepting a subject are two entirely different things. I would discuss many things would people of different backgrounds but wouldn’t necessarily accept what they are saying.

“including those who speak Arabic” I fail to understand what does this signify…

It would certainly be a great favour if you don’t write about things that you have “read or heard” without verification. anyway, matters with no base can’t stand for long.

I do not know how much you know about any subject nor is it any of my business to question it as long as it doesn’t affect a third person negatively or so inclined to do so.

I request all writers on this blog to refrain from writing about religious topics with no prior knowledge as this is what leads to fitnah.

And folks human beings learn every second of their life and still they don’t know about lots. So if you are receiving knowledge from some place so verify and if satisfied, accept it. Why take offense??

Brother Yusha, this post is one example of creating fitnah…one example…give me time and I will compile all…

    Regards

@ Momina: like Yusha, you also need to improve your English. I never said I believe that black is associated with the devil, I said in most cultures black is associated with Satan or mourning or bad luck. Secondly, I can tell you that I know much more about Islam than the average Pakistani Muslim. I have discussed Islam with many scholars (including those who speak Arabic), but I will not write here about many things that I have read or heard, because that will only stir fresh controversy. I request all writers on this blog to refrain from using religion whenever they can’t explain something properly.

    >>>u know i feel most of the authors of this website love to create fitnah in religion.

@ Momina: That is a HUGE statement. Can you name those authors? (please keep in mind you said most, so I am expecting many names)

    Salam,
    @tanya, very well said.

u know i feel most of the authors of this website love to create fitnah in religion.

Mr. Lakhani, no offense meant, but considering, as mentioned by you, your approximate age and then the questions that u ask, and accepting u as a practicing Muslim….then how come u don’t know about sooo many things of your religion???
one should always keep in mind that if they cant do any good at least they should avoid doing bad.
u might say that u just wanted to know…if that is the case then re-frame your question. a question is just that a question…no personal ideas and opinions involved.

anyway, coming to the topic, you say yourself that u wear black so is it bcoz men are considered unlucky etc?
u seem to have put in ind that black is associated with unluckiness and satanic stuff plus bereavement. so why wear it yourself???

In Islam black is permissible for both men and women alike. One of the false innovations (bid’ah) connected to this colour is the practice of deliberately wearing black at times of bereavement, which also involves imitating the Christians.

At times of bereavement people should do what is commanded in Islam, which is to say ‘Innaa Lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji’oon. Allaahumma ajirni fi museebati wa’khluf li khayran minhaa (Truly! To Allaah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return. O Allaah, reward me for my calamity and compensate me with something better than it). Not change the colour of their apparel to black!

The dress of a Muslim woman need not only be black. It is permissible for her to wear any colour of clothing so long as it covers her ‘awrah, does not resemble men’s clothing, and is not so tight as to show the shape of her limbs or so thin as to show what is beneath it, and does not provoke temptation.

Many women choose to wear black, not because it is obligatory, but because it is farthest removed from being an adornment.

Lastly, Mr. Lakhani the West has more knowledge of Islam than most of the so-called Muslims. As Muslims one should know everything about their religion so that they would be able to clarify any misconception people have about any matter related to it. u always advise others to first do their research and get their facts clear…it’s high time u started practicing what you preach.
    Regards
