Why are Sikhs not allowed to eat halal meat?

Years ago, in the book “Bhowani Junction” (which was made into a film and shot in Lahore), I read about Sikhs not being allowed to eat “halal” meat. I thought the writer might have made a mistake, since Sikhs (believing in one God) are closer to Muslims than Hindus. But now I have come across someone else saying the same thing, in fact it is Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the supreme temporal body of the Sikhs. In today’s Times of India, there is an article entitled “Those who trim hair, beard are not true Sikhs: SGPC”,. I have no quarrel with that, since this is the only visible feature of Sikhs which makes them stand out from others.. But then the article says, (and this I cannot understand), “Sikhs should abstain from liquor, cigar and halal meat”.

Of course, what they eat or drink is their own business, but why this ban on halal meat? If there’s a Sikh scholar who’s reading this, I’ll be grateful if he can explain this peculiar tenet for being a true Sikh.

Sunny are you kidding me? Have you ever seen how the process works? Or as usual, indian jumping to conclusions

Learn the process first, then talk. In the west they use electrocution and other methods to slaughter livestock.

Islamic method is most humane. The meat is fresh and consumed not long after hilal is complete.

Hend — if you have a problem with it, dont eat meat. Period. Stick to lentils, curry and tree leaves if you want.

sikhs do not eat halal meat b/c the killing method is very torturous to the animal, and is added pain and torture for it to bear when it dies. With jhatka, the killing and pain is lightning fast, so therefore the jhatka way of killing an animal is much more humane. And for all those people who say halal is more hygenic, ask yourself this, how much of that “blood you drain” do you see on a cooked piece of jhatka meat? NONE. The sikhs believe that animals shouldnt have to suffer more than they need to.

Sikhs are not allowed to eat any meat if they can survive witout that . What i belive is they are not very rigid about that. But in war times when means were limited there are instances where they had killed animals even horses . yeahin extreme circumstances they can eat but the animal have to be killed ny themselves. Kutha meat or Koshar is strictly prohibited and the offence is equal to any of the kurhat( Bad deeds) Which includes consumption of tobacco and seeing others woman with bad intentions.

Just out of curiosity about your statement.

“Either way, it is an act of sacrifice. We arent barbarians. We respect the animal and are requesting Allah to accept this sacrifice on our behalf.”

Why is an animal needed to be sacrificed in the name of God?

If Sikhs are not allowed to eat any kind of meat, why aren’t they vegetarians?

The original question by SL was about wanting to know why Sikhs are not allowed Halal meat. The reasons were explained by some of the commentators. There were also some comments explaining the advantage of Halal method.

I am a question regarding this if anyone can give an objective reply. Is it not possible to achieve the same level of hygiene in Jhatka method by allowing the blood to drain? Isn’t this done in every method?

Before this breaks into an all out which method is superior, let us atleast show mutual respect to whatever method people want to follow. Finally whether Halal or Jhatka (Haram), the animal still dies and whether we may not appreciate one method or the other, the poor animal may not appreciate any of the two.
