We Should Ban Facebook Ourselves

Ban FacebookA lot of people are rejoicing at the ban imposed by the government on Facebook. Well, congratulations to the government on taking such a step. I do not know of too many Islamic countries who could be bothered to do the same. However, in my opinion, we should have taken the step ourselves by deleting our Facebook accounts. Government intervention is not really necessary. Or are we hypocrites. On one hand we blast Facebook and on the other hand we can’t live without it.

Facebook doesn’t earn money simply by someone visiting it. They earn money from advertisements. While advertisements can be avoided, the issue is that we continue to use a social network that has made fun of our Prophet (saw). This is obviously not done in the name of free speech but it is a deliberate ploy to insult and mock Muslims.

It was good to see that there we no violent protests this time around, but it is surprising to see that a lot of Muslims have said that we should ignore this event. First off, if we were to ignore it then why did bloggers all over Pakistan share this news in the first place. People who were not aware would not have taken notice anyway. Now that we know, we are told to ignore it. If someone makes fun of our father, we can’t tolerate it, but if someone makes fun of our prophet, how can we ignore it. Ignoring problems does not make them better. Proper steps must be taken to overcome them.

It was nice to know that a blasphemous website was hacked three days ago; just wondering why Facebook hasn’t met the same fate. What do Muslims gain from Facebook anyway, except the countless number of hours that are wasted. It would be better to give that time to academic education. Those who are married should spend more time with their wife and kids, instead of wasting it on Facebook.

To those people who think this is a mischief by a group of youngsters, I would like to disagree. These kinds of events get full support from social networks, organizations and governments, otherwise the page would have been deleted a long time ago. What do the governments of those countries not do to us that we continue to use Facebook. They invade our lands, shed our blood, rape our sisters, divide us to rule, destroy our homes, destroy our culture, insult our Prophet (saw), make fun of our religion, and we can’t delete one Facebook account. Shame on us!

The Pakistani High Court is a JOKE!
They have banned these websites which have no control over the content. People all over the world can defame Islam, draw pictures of whatever they choose and post to the web. They can not control the actions of the entire globe. Maybe they should bulldoze the huge Horse racing track in Lahore, Pindi and Karachi. I mean isn’t gambling not allowed. Maybe they should arrest the importers of Johnny Walker Black Label. Isn’t Alcohol Haram. Maybe they should stop taking Bribes. Wait they are the ones sitting in the VIP stands placing huge bets and going home and drinking Black Label and accepting huge amounts of money to let off a friends friends son from a charge of raping a young boy. They need to start looking at their own actions and the actions of corrupt Pakistanis before passing judgement on a website which enables Pakistanis to stay in touch with friends and family across the world. That is what Facebook is about. Staying in touch with your loved ones.
    Pakistan is a JOKE.
PS I was born in Lahore.

@Raheel: Very well said, the most important point.

It might be good to remember that about 80% of the world knows, or cares, very little about Islam, has gotten by pretty well without it, and due to the unfortunate introduction to it on 9/11, looks at it with suspicion. Trust must be earned; it is not simply given, and cannot be taken.

The world is a mirror. If you smile at it, it will smile back at you.

    So what are you saying?
That people who do not like Muslims or who oppose Islam can effectively ban you and all “good” Muslims from any part of the internet that they choose, simply by doing something that may or may not be intended to offend you or something from which you take offence, intentional or not.
I am not a Muslim, I am a westerner with no love for any religion but it seems to me that you harm yourselves and no one else when you rise to the bait like this.
You may consider facebook unimportant, or youtube, or wikipedia or whatever, but you effectively are giving the power to people who do not like you to determine where you can and cannot go, this is foolish in the extreme.

Secondarily, freedom of speech is freedom to offend, no one ever, no matter if they are the worst of the worst has ever objected to freedom of speech that they agree with.
It is there to protect the rights of people to say things that you or I or anyone might disagree with, even to the extent of finding offensive.
By doing this, in defending people’s rights to disagree with you, to offend you, it protects your right to say things to challenge them, to offend them.

Freedom of expression cannot exist without freedom to offend. Christians are constantly offended in democratic countries. They argue that Christianity is strong enough to survive this. Why isn’t Islam and why is it so insecure?

No other Muslim country (there are 57) has banned Facbook or YouTube or Wikipaedia. Pakistani authorities are such hypocrites, they are not concerned about the rampant poverty and corruption, but they have to ban access to information. Now we shall not be able to watch the antics of our corrupt political leaders on YouTube, neither will we be able to find out how backward we are in respect to other countries, if we are banned from visiting such sites. The blasphemy will continue because there are nuts on the other side as well (just as we have them here). The thing to do is what is advocated by Islam: try to convince them that they’re in the wrong. By banning websites, we are only playing into their hands and making a laughing-stock of ourselves.

Banning of any website will not work for long time. You can’t stop everyone in the world from saying or doing something. And basically closing your eyes doesn’t mean that the storm will stop. I personally do not like the way to offend or heart anyone in religious or any other means. The idea to drawing may be an offend to Muslims. But what do you think the solution of this problem? Threat everyone to chop their head? I think the Muslims has created this problem by showing intolerance to different opinions. They give the way to make silly things to an important matter.

I support the banning webs in Pakistan, I believe this nation has very less tolerance for other believers. But at the end they are the looser. Showing patience is a part of democracy. Well you can shout on someone or on something he has said to you but posing threat to life is an animal act.

If go into the mode of we vs them, you would never succeed in create understanding. We either get silent like deleting the account or get furious in debates but where the hell is discourse. I guess in the hell!

every one is accessing facebook via proxies thats how we are making fun of us and giving the chance to west to laugh at us but banning facebook not an option why because if they start doing that on yahoo and google and all over the internet what would u do? stop using the internet? maybe yes but the better solution to this problem is to gather rebuttal material and argue with them rationally and try to convince them and put an effort to clear their misconception about islam which their media has propagated and if it doesnt work them leave it on Allah to defend the Honour of his beloved Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) because thats all we could do otherwise banning everything will even make things worse for us and will send us to stone age and we will become weaker and west will get successful in their mission and will crew us in the end.

Think logically..u lack reasoning boi..that’s what Quran teaches us…
