The virgins of Paradise

In an interview, Syrian-born Saudi scholar Muhammad Al-Munajid described the virgins as “black-eyed….beautiful white young women, with black pupils and very white retinas, whose skin is so delicate and bright that it causes confusion….they are like hidden pearls….They have wide eyes, and they have not been touched by man or jinn. They are virgins, who yearn for their husbands. They are all the same age, morally and physically beautiful. They are like precious gems and pearls in their splendor, their clarity, their purity, and their whiteness. They are like hidden pearls – as pure as a pearl within a shell, untouched by man. Each one of them is so beautiful that you can see the bone-marrow through the delicate flesh on their legs”.

    Women are mere playthings and are given as a reward to Muslims who do things considered meritorius in the Islamic view,though others may beg to differ !! This is what most Muslims, whether a sweeper or a doctor, tend to believe.There is no logic involved here, just blind belief.It seems that the thing uppermost in their thoughts is how to obtain pleasure.

    Nowadays the word weird is often used loosely to mean something that is unfamiliar or unknown. It is also misused when you come accross another culture or religion which you try to view through the glasses of your own religion.

    Unfortunately there is no easy answer for people with such opinions. If they are really interested in understanding the ‘weird’ then they should keep open mind and take the trouble to read the whole thread but if they enjoy weird things then I am sure one’s own religion can more than fulfill that need.

    @ Venkat: All that the Shaykh says makes a lot of sense, I fail to understand what it is that you find weird. I have been yearning all along to get some reasonable observations on what is wrong with all that he says. I hope you can come-up with some intelligent response.

    May I ask on what grounds you came to this conclusion? Again, I hope to see a sound explanation after you go through the history of comments.

    @ Murthy: All this is not in the Holy Koran. According to earlier interpretations, virgins would be given to martyrs. However, the Arabic word for “virgin” is similar to “raisin”, which makes sense. Raisins (dried grapes) are very delicious and were not easily available in Arabia in those days. In any case, the description of the virgins given by this Syrian/Saudi mullah is not credible. I don’t know where he got it from (I’ve not come across it in any of the books I’ve read).
