Prejudice to Pakistani Cricketers at IPL 2010 auction

IPL 2010 or IPL TeesraIt has been said many times that Politics and Sports should never be mixed, but when it comes to India and Pakistan it’s sometimes hard to keep the two apart. None of the eleven shortlisted players from T20 World Champion Team – Pakistan were picked up by any of the eight franchises at the DLF IPL auction for season 3. Can this be genuine? Why were Pakistani players put through the imitation of entering the auction when they were to be boycotted by the franchises?

According to Dawn an unidentified franchise official told AFP that he was not surprised because nobody was willing to take a chance due to uncertainty regarding Pakistani player’s availability. Shahid Afridi has also called it a humiliation of players adding that, “We applied for the IPL only on their insistence and not on our own.”

IPL is a heavily commercialized, lucrative form of the game and practical business considerations matter more for the franchises. So it could be obvious that it was dictated and directed by the officials to not to bid for Pakistani players. The fear of reprisal may have made franchises hesitant to gamble on a Pakistani player.

Is it the true sportsmen spirit or prejudice which has been showcased by Indian Franchise owners while there is a media campaign ‘Aman Ki Asha‘ by the two leading media groups of Indo Pak is going on to mobilize peace process?

I would love to keep my point to cricket but don’t you think that the same rule should apply to others too? Look at the comments and the accusations going on here.

I know 26/11 is painful to defend for you but I mentioned it just to give an idea of the public opinion in India. Don’t you even wonder why so many people, so many countries around the world are pointing fingers at Pakistan? Could there is some change just a little bit somewhere that something wrong is happening on you side?

When educated Pakistanis like you take a defiant stance that 26/11 is to be proved and moreover would quote Ksab to prove your points…it does not go down as honest with us. May be some Indians provided ground support but all this can be investigated better and faster if only Pakistan would cooperate. When the planners and trainers are going around freely in Pakistan, to be asked to give more and more proof instead of being proactively helped in collecting it, is plain insulting. As a man from Mumbai and whose loyalty to Mumbai is unquestionable, I think Pakistanis sound very dishonest when they start talking like this (like you did in this instance) and raising doubts about this event. Don’t you think you need to ask why people like Masood Azhar who hijacked Indian plane in 1999 can move freely in Pakistan, don’t you think YOUR country has some obligations too?

However I am not mentioning these to justify the so called snubbing of Pakistani players in IPL auction, I am just giving you an idea of public opinion currently in India. BUT to think that all this would result in mistreating Pakistani players then you are wrong.

I never said that politics and cricket are apart but my point is that the accusation of IPL auction being a deliberate attempt to just humiliate Pakistani players is incorrect. In the absense of solid proof, these kind of accusations are called loose talk.

Please give up the hatred accquired and think with open minded. I think people in this region lack the ability of introspection and looking at our own faults. I don’t want to trade allegations on this topic anymore. You are free to think whatever of BCCI or IPL if that makes you happy.

I would appreciate if u restrict ur comment to cricket…….I just hate when u have at last nothing but to mention 26/11. It is not proved yet who did it. according to latest news items Mr. kasab has allegedly claim involvement of 4 Indians probably one kashmiri, who were killed by Indian police that day……

Well ur comment is proving my point of petty politics and cricket are never apart.

Love is a given, hatred is acquired

It was all pre-planned bull shit and Pakistani players and specially authorties are responsible for this either they should have present their case more effectively and somehow made clear that it is all set from their side and no un-certatnity thus leaving no excuse for Mr Modi. In best case after knowing that they are reluctant to get them in they shouldn’t have tried it at all and just ignore it. They can focus on lot of other things I guess specially T20 cup coming to prove once again what they got.

On Indian part they are involved in such things from long and their is no surprise in this, the overall mindset of putting a foot in Pakistani throat whenever a chance come along will never let things happen normally and we should stop looking at them for some benefit or favor but should expect such blows here and there.

Relax, take a deep breath and then let out all your anger. We are not bad people and not so calculating too. We like Pakistani players a lot. We cannot think of humiliating them. The fact that they won T20 world cup is one of the major events of the last decade because of the odds they had to overcome. If we leave aside the rhetoric for the moment, every Indian cricket fan is reasonable enough to understand this. They genuinely love players like Younis, Akhar and others.

This is not to say that Indian people are very happy about Pakistan right now, most of them feel hurt about Pakistan’s unwillingness to act on its own against the masters of 26/11 terrorists and putting up excuses like evidence not being sufficient. They feel hurt because the relations with Pakistan were quite good before this and they expected a change in the way things were handled this time. Many Pakistanis try to artificially link this somehow to Samjhauta express without realizing that the evidence in this case is not even comparable. Indians think of such arguments as a proof of Pakistani public opinion against taking action on terrorists.

But all this is part of politics. It can result in Pakistan players being unwanted in the short term but it CANNOT result in a conspiracy to humiliate them. NO NEVER.

Whatever happened is not good and we all feel bad for the players. I cannot fault the Franchises for not taking a financial risk. What I can fault them for is, asking for these players to be included in the auction and not thinking of guarantees and risks before hand.

Now if only you will think with an open mind about this then you will realize that this is not some conspiracy to humiliate anyone, it is just an outcome of the circumstances.

Q1. Out of 66, only 10 players were recruited. Out of the remaining 56, 11 were Pakistanis. Why do we not hear the other 45 players cribbing?

Because they did not belong to the World T20 Champion team. Any one more flamboyant and effective in T20 cricket than Afridi?

Q2. What did the IPL/BCCI/Indian govt. get out of this?

They want to prove that only India is the father of cricket. If India can pressurize Sri Lanka not to visit Pakistan, it can also guide its franchises to be a two sided knife. First they request to include players and than neglect them totally. Rubbish.
This situation is tense and will create lot of trauma for cricket fans.

Maddie, I find the points you made quite reasonable, I just wish you weren’t rude in your closing line. That way you’d be more effective too.

If before the start of the IPL there is another 26/11 style attack in India and if once again it is proved that Pakistan had a hand in it, what are the chances that any of the Pakistani players would be granted a visa? More likely, like last year, the Pak govt itself will advise it’s players to not to go to India. What happens to the millions of dollars spent by the franchisees. Even if the amount is returned, the franchisees would have lost the opportunity to recruit a major player in the team.

Economy-wise you might be only 49th in the world but that should still be enough to understand the concepts of Profit and Loss.

And when I said Security-Risk, I meant risk to the Pak players, not by the Pak-players.

I have 2 very simple questions for you…

Q1. Out of 66, only 10 players were recruited. Out of the remaining 56, 11 were Pakistanis. Why do we not hear the other 45 players cribbing??? Is Kamran Akmal a better wicket-keeper than Brad Haddin or is Umar Gul a better bowler than Doug Bollinger? Not a single player from NZ, Bangladesh, Canada, Holland (yeah the franchisees had even shown interest in a dutch layer) or Zimbabwe was chosen. Only 1 player each from England and Sri-Lanka was chosen. Only 2 from RSA and Aus were chosen. But none of them have said anything about the whole issue…why only Pakistan???

Q2. What did the IPL/BCCI/Indian govt. get out of this?
People will still be watching the IPL. The PCB has always supported the BCCI in an ICC vote (irrespective of the relations between the 2 countries). And the government has no monetary interests in the IPL.

Please don’t say that it was done to down-grade the image of Pakistan in cricketing circles. You and I both know that in any case no major international team will be touring Pakistan for the next few years.

So once again, the IPL/BCCI/The Indian govt/ or for that matter even the franchisee, what did anyone get out of it.

The way I see it is this. The franchisees together expressed interest in 66 players including 11 from Pak. As stated in today’s Times of India, IPL advised them of support in procuring the visas. However, when they requested for a guarantee, the IPL asked the Indian govt and the Indian govt right-fully (for reasons stated in the beginning of the post) refused to give a guarantee. They did not say that Pak players WILL NOT be getting visas. It was then left to the franchisee owners to evaluate the risk which they did from a business perspective.

    @Shakir

Mate, I really didn’t understand the co-relations you have made in your post so I won’t even bother replying. I’m sure that there must be at least 1 good Institute in Pak that teaches you to speak sense. If not maybe learn from your compatriot Hina.

If you are already convinced that Indian government forced the franchises not to bid for the players then there is nothing I can do…this debate is pointless.

My understanding is, the franchises are the ones to be blamed and this is slowly emerging. They initially showed interest in these players and so their names were included in the auction list. Later the same franchises asked IPL and BCCI for guarantee (monetary) about their participation. BCCI asked the government and obviously the government said that this is a private event and given the situation in the sub continent how can anyone give any guarantees? One small even like 26/11 and situation can change, PCB can again stop players from coming or they may decide not to come. Also the players are a huge security risk. Government cannot guarantee their security because they will be distributed among different teams and being a private even the government cannot spend crazy sum on arranging presidential security for every team. Upon realizing this the franchises decided not to bid.

So as you can see, the expectations and demands of the franchises were wrong in the first place but I think the decision taken by them is probably right.

The only wrong in this event is the initial requests made by the franchises for the players to be included in the auction, they should have first checked the possibilities of security and guarantees and then decided.

I feel bad for the players but to say that this was preplanned humiliation is an over-reaction. Once again I ask, has any player declared so far that they will never play in IPL? Why not? Because they also know the practical considerations that led to this.
