Pervez Musharraf Protocol in U.K by Pakistan Government. Justified?

Pervez Musharraf Enjoying Army protocol in U.K

Former President of Pakistan and Ex Army Chief Pervez Musharraf is now living a lavish life in U.K. He has at his disposal the services of, at least, 12 regular officers of the Pakistan Army for his security in London headed by a serving Colonel, Ilyas. The team of officers is deputed at Mr. Musharraf’s luxurious residence situated on the Edgware Road, London, for his security and for providing him daily services. This team is being paid a huge amount per month from the national exchequer.

While the ongoing crisis he is facing and probably article 6 sword over him and rumors of treason charges the protocol Pakistani government is providing him is questionable. He is controversial with his status in Pakistan for sure while the scenario is not beneficial for Army either. It has been speculated also that Army is backing such actions while government is on front foot. Below are some angles of happenings about his protocol.

MUSHARRAF PROTOCOL in London.jpg

According Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK Wajid Sham-ul-Hassan,

The Pakistan High Commission (HC) in London has been directed by Islamabad to give former dictator General (retd) Pervez Musharraf full protocol of ex-president during his stay in London, and we are bound to act in line with the directions of Islamabad.

Former chief of the Army staff (COAS) Mirza Aslam Beg said that,

According to the rules and regulations of the Pakistan Army, no such protocol was permissible for an ex-Army chief. There was some rule of providing a batman, a PS, a driver and an Army telephone to an Army chief on his retirement But Benazir Bhutto, during her second tenure as prime minister, had ordered the then COAS Jahangir Karamat to withdraw these facilities from Ex Army chiefs and that rule still prevails while no Jawan or officer of the Pakistan Army could be deputed with an Army chief after his retirement for security purposes. Provision of such a facility in a foreign country is simply out of the question.

The new spokesman of Musharraf, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif confirmed the news and said:

“Yes, there are some Army officials deputed with Musharraf but according to my knowledge some of them have resigned from their Army positions.”

Now here is a comment from a Pakistani on another forum siasat.pk discussing the same topic.

“I am working at a store on Edgware road where all the corrupt people come for shopping with the money they looted from Pakistan. Musharraf is living on Edgware road in a posh and expensive apartment and he does have an Army office of the colonel rank on his security who comes to our store asking for fresh baked naans (roti) and he is been paid by the Pakistani government from the Poor peoples tax money. He is also enjoying the protocol by the Pak Army and the British Government He seldom comes out coZ afraid of facing the Pakistanis.

i would like to comment, but feel that the above and especially below from A Shah could not be more true. Everyone, please have a careful read of the comments especially the last sentance.

    Thank you A Shah

Now we come to the the topic of HIS TRIAL, we have to believe that only himself was not behind the coup but there were many generals who participated the coup in a very organized manner, so what are we talking about to try all of them or COMPLETE MILITARY HIGH COMMAND? Are we inviting another coup or what? ? ? ?

I wonder why we are lost in petty thoughts… Perhaps our minds need another coat of evolution. In the end do we really know what democracy is? Can this system be applied to country like ours if yes in which form? If someone like Musharraf who happens to make an entry into the governement in a non democratic way and later introduces democracy in a thoughtful and logical fashion; instead of tryin to understand what was being done we started with shaming, blaming and maligning the ruler. We associate ourselves with parties and their leaders which are beyond any character and decency, WHO cares if they were elected by votes… It is time to wake up… Do not become a mockery in this world… Be honest and thoughtful please…

Its a well known fact that introduction of Musharraf is result of failure of democracy in pakistan in 99 and many of them were relaxed and thanked to GOD and military when coup was taken place. Failure of democratic leaders was based on many reasons and if we recall, curruption was one the them and if we compare Musharraf with those leaders, Musharraf is far better and clean person. During his tenure he earned by writting his book (legally) a millions of dollars so he did not need to do any thing wrong to get money for his personal use in comparison to those who the most currupt leaders who not only looted the government money but public one too, evidences are avilable on record. And as far as issues like NRO, Emergency, Akbar Bugti and Lal Masjid are concerned, history will tell us that in all these situations priority of “SAB SEY PAHLEY PAKISTAN” must be missing since we can blame Musharraf for any thing but he was and IS a very patriotic person exists as Pakistani. To attempt of Trial, is a process of few betrayed leaders of our country supported by IF CH, who are in verge of revenge only other wise these is nothing new in it leaders in powers dictates their rules to benefit them but it was not there in case of Musharraf, whatever ammenment wroing doings happend were in the interest of the COUNTRY only. Irony is that he was the one who gave TOUNGE to Digital and Print media, which results in long procession against him by many channels (I wonder that show a 30 minutes drama they have to show many advertisement within tha time frame but to show many days live telecast of long march of CJ, who was sponsoring them?) these questions lies in many minds and the people who are inerested in trying Musharraf, must be in a better position to answer them.. May GOD save Pakistan, we have to look forward and if try to look back than we have to go long back and try many who have been on and off part of the wroing doing – so try the luck and see the outcome… if any.

Who is having pain or problem with protocol? The point here is that According to the rules and regulations of the Pakistan Army, no such protocol was permissible for an ex-Army chief
On duty Colonel is provided for his protocol in U.K, Why? when it is against rules.
His last professional profile was of President than which protocol to be offered As COAS or president?

  9. Shakir Lakhani Avatar

Why not? Even a nincompoop like Rafiq Tarrar is entitled to full protocol, even though he was made president only because he was the Sharif family’s legal adviser.
