NRO- Here comes the pain

So the Pandora box is finally open and as expected we have been revealed to the list of “nobles among us” whom we have never given the credit’ “The NRO Brigade”. Before the list was made public which is undoubtedly a bold but compelled move,, many of the beneficiaries have made this land there exclusive domain and after the list and their deeds are now public,, many voices have been raised to recheck the ECL list as soon the will be on their way out along with their baggage.

At this stage I have to some extent realized why this NRO BRIGADE never protested the ever increasing US influence inside Pakistan, like their entry and exit from out territory. Of course they have kept it as a tool in case they had to face the ECL (jokes apart).

Anyhow with PM Gilani’s statement things have taken a new turn. Till now most of the observers were of the view that somehow Mr. Zardari will manage to draw all the PPP support behind him on this issue. With Gilani offering resignation even if his wife secured relief under NRO, a burning ball has been thrown to the top office. NRO suspension was natural and expected. But the real drama will begin once the make and break will start. The refusal of many top office bearers from resignation has landed the whole political scene in doldrums. If the president will stay immune (hardly possible under the present circumstances) his brigade will not let him eat the fruits of their deed alone.

The judiciary holds the final blow, and with the voice of masses echoing “we want to seek truth” things will definitely head for a serious direction. Anyhow, like before I have always emphasized that a leadership whose power rests in “a foreign capital” rather than its own people will face the music. The revelation of names was just a trailer, the real episode will commence when we will come to know regarding the cases been set aside.

Being a neutral entity the biggest fear to any Pakistani will be the “minus all”. This democracy, well many would argue its legitimacy was a blessing after the era of Musharraf, but like always our politicians whether in power or in opposition have let us down. There is still a chance left for them to undo their sin by removing “black sheep” among themselves. Else with the situation prevailing inside and around our borders, and the way masses are fighting over sugar and flour you don’t need more to create a situation like that we witnessed in 1917 Russian revolution. It’s anybody’s guess who will be our Lenin this time around.

So the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) beneficiaries list comes out. The media is happy that those persons who enjoyed taking advantage of the NRO have light casted upon them, while the government is trying to push forward the argument of how they have respected the Supreme Court’s judgment and have publicized the list. It seems to be a win-win situation for all parties. But is it really? Calls for the resignation of ministries and portfolios have echoed from all corners. How has this zero-sum game turned into a finger-pointing-name-calling battle?

Pakistan as a nation is a peace loving country. The terrorist activities in the country do not help portray that image in the global circuit. However, the political issue regarding the list of NRO beneficiaries being highlighted does not help the cause either. What the media can do is help the country by reporting in an optimistic manner on how good we are and how effectively we are fighting terrorism, because that is the real issue at hand.

It is time to get deviated from the issues such as NROs. It’s a live wire but citizens believe that there are much more important issues to be addressed. The media should take sole responsibility and give maximum space to tolerant and positive messages. The majority os Pakistanis are peace loving. With this action of media the terror elements can be decreased as media I believe has the power to induce even a suicide bombers mind if they are showing the rite thing.

@ skunk: whether it was a Sindhi or a Punjabi, it doesn’t matter. Those who looted the country will have to pay for it sooner or later. In any other country, Zardari or Gilani or other looters (who benefited from NRO) would not have been allowed to contest elections.

@ mr abbasi, you fail to see the point I was trying to make, your proposition about taking a poll on this web site will not reflect the true picture of Pakistani public, the opinions would be of the educated middle class at best. The ‘masses’ who dwell out side the cities do not agree with your opinions I gave references of recent Gallup surveys for the same reason.

The theory of worst democracy is better than dictatorship stands true as always. Should not the fact that NRO was withdrawn when it could easily have been repromulgated by the president be an eye opener?

ps. Alas yes the bench has restarted hearings for the missing persons. It was indeed quite a sight when we all discovered on the 3rd of November that missing persons were still missing. Not a single hearing was held or a case pursued between 16th of March and 3rd November 2009- me wonders why?!

Very well said but it also makes my heart and blood boil and rush up to my brains that those politicians who are not on NRO list … are not clean either. In some way or other they have wet their hands in corruption and corrupt hands are void of the valor to take control of anything. It is strange that they still don’t realize the tide of events and still want to stick together instead of sticking with the people and coming out clean … they are still doing their utmost to clarify President … and other cronies which makes them adversaries to the crime and are equally culpable. Nawaz Shareef has been bombarding PPP on Charter of Democracy which makes me hate him even more because when he signed Charter of Democracy with BB … he very well knew what the settlement was. They joined under American umbrella because US was brokering a deal for them with Mush to return to Pakistan. So this was not a Charter of Democracy but ‘a mal-a-fide deal of “honor among thieves” kind of thing between these two former looteras of Pakistan’. His biggest upsetting is why Zardari and Gillani succeeded in boot-polishing americans and why was he not given the honor for which he is now campaigning. yuck!

I only strayed here by chance, however, I must say that you are certainly oblivious to the reality.

There are no masses crying for justice, the average resident of Sindh, is actually furious at the notion that 97% of cases were from Sindh. It seems it was all milk and honey elsewhere. If the polls taken by Gallup Pakistan are of any worth, they should be as they were when they reported lowest ever ratings for Zardari, then majority of people in Sindh and Balochistan think that media is the major cause of anarchy where as 62% of people believe that the current set up if continued will be able to solve their problems. What masses are these who don’t vote and be counted?

The Chief Justice’s sudden disinterest in Balochistan issue and the missing persons case after his reinstatement has already forced many to rethink his valor. The last thing he needs to do away with his credibility would be to reinterpret an explicit article of Constitution to convict a President who is democratically elected, at the same time refusing to act against a military dictator, hindered by a nominal Act of parliament.

It would be a shame, but is that not what this nation is all about..

It is just a tip of an ugly ice berg. I hope that list of bank loan defauters and list of public office holders with criminal records are also published.

We need to have access to background of all members of parliments, if we are serious in removing NRO BRIGADE for good.
