No to 5-day week

Those who are in favour of another weekly holiday beside Sunday, cite (among other things), the tremendous progress made by countries which observe a five-day working week. They forget that after the second world war, the citizens of the defeated countries worked an extra four hours daily without claiming overtime or extra wages. They ignore the fact that in advanced countries, political parties do not call for strikes, and work does not come to a standstill for three days if a political figure is assassinated (as happened recently after the murder of Ms Benazir Bhutto).

They claim that the measure will result in a huge cut in electricity consumption. What about the extra electricity which will be used when offices and factories have to work an extra hour every day to maintain output? As for the enormous saving in fuel which is expected, the exact opposite will occur. All provincial government employees will head in their vehicles for their hometowns on Friday evenings to spend two days there (which they can’t do with one weekly holiday). As for those living in cities, they will spend the extra holiday going for overnight picnics to distant places, consuming more fuel than they normally do. And an extra weekly holiday will be the last straw for industrialists, who are already reeling from the effects of the rioting, looting and burning which took place last month, as well as the power breakdowns which affect production.

Rather than observe Saturday and Sunday as weekly holidays, it would be much better if we gave up two holidays (5th February and 1st May) which make the nation poorer and our rivals happy.

In which Hadith did you read that these holidays are allowed? I read the Hadith and I could not find anything about observing a day off from work.

Mr. Yusha, you did not say whether it is compulsory for Muslims to refrain from work on Kashmir Day or the first of May every year (as well as Iqbal Day or 25 December). I have studied Hadith extensively and I am convinced that Islam does not allow holidays, unless one is sick. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I Completely agree that in some situations it is important for people to work as hard as possible i.e Wars etc . I just dont see the point of doing it right now. Since the world is now a much more open place we are competing with many other countries rather than just our own neighbours. Slowly the whole world is shifting to a 5 day or 40 hour week. In pakistan on the other hand people are expected to work harder for less money. The main motivation is profit for larger companies . Most companies are under staffed as it is so you are expected to work from 9 – 8 . Adding in the extremely long transit times that means you are away from your house from 8:30 to 8:30 , adding in the 8 hours you need for sleep that basically makes 20 hours a day . So what the point of work then . No one works for fun i.e. the main motivation is profit you might enjoy your work but you wouldnt do it for free.
If all the developed countries in the world ( some of who have much bigger economies than us and much smaller populations ) can produce their products and perform their services in 5 days why cant we ? I belive this is basically because of the fact that our work enviroment is extremely inefficent . We use obselete machinery and outdated methods. This may help up keep up with the world eventually thought this inefficency will cause us to lag behind . Then what should we do , work sundays as well .
The one day weekend also is responsible for the lack of an entertainment industry in pakistan . If people had 2 days off you would expect them to do something on the weekend rather than just sleep it off. Since people will have to pay for their own gas and electricity on the weekend rather than expect the office to pay for it .

Shops remain open during Eid because they are private businesses where people have a chance to earn a lot of money. Eid is a day meant to be enjoyed. A person wont be able to enjoy much if he spent the entire day in his office.

Mr. Yusha, since you appear to have so much knowledge of Islam, perhaps you can tell me whether it is mandatory for Muslims to have holidays on certain days of the year. In fact, when I was a kid, shops used to remain open on Eid days also (in 1954, I bought shoes from a Bata shop on Eid-ul-Fitr). In 1973, I spent some time in Peshawer, and there too shops were open on Eid-al-Azha.

“You know what’s wrong with this country? Too many holidays.”

    – what is wrong with holidays?

What you have done in your life is truly impressive. However, man is not a work machine. Men are not created to spend their life in their office.

You know what’s wrong with this country? Too many holidays. Most people just want an excuse to stay at home. I have worked on Eid days, I have worked with bombs falling all around me, and I have worked in the bitter cold of Quetta and Peshawer as well as the scorching heat of Multan and Sukkur. When my country’s armed forces needed oil, I worked continuously for forty eight hours while the whole of Karachi was under curfew. And even today, when most people of my age have retired, I work even on holidays. And I have all the time in the world to go to a health club, and to libraries and wedding functions.

“and work does not come to a standstill for three days if a political figure is assassinated (as happened recently after the murder of Ms Benazir Bhutto).”

    – Political figures do not get assasinated every week.

“As for those living in cities, they will spend the extra holiday going for overnight picnics to distant places”

    – Highly unlikely.

I do not agree or disagree with a five day week, but if you are going to criticize an idea or opinion then you need to come up with solid statements as to why you oppose an idea instead of vague attempt.

er… excuse me . most people in the country actually work from 9 to 8 anyway that is 11 hours without over time . Do you also realize that people in our country have no avenues for entertainment . Since you are working the whole week most people are sleeping on sundays or just resting at home . Thats one of the primary reasons we have no sources of entertainment in the country peole have no time .

The only people who dont want a saturday holiday are the people who own industries etc. They are using old obselete machiney hence they need to keep their factories going the whole week to try to fill their orders . And its not like they dont have enough money to upgrade they would just rather piss it away on luxury items .

Personally i think every working person in pakistan want this . and how many people do u think will travel between cities as compared to the amount ofcars on the road these days
