Junaid Jamshed criticized by leading Ulema for endorsement of Lays Chips

According to a report in the Urdu daily “Ummat” of 29 June 2009, leading scholars have criticized Junaid Jamshed for declaring Lays chips as “halal”.

Mufti Naeem of Jamaa-e-Binnoria (SITE, Karachi), Mufti Muneebur Rahman (Chairman, Ruet-Hilal Committee), Mufti Abu Bakr (Jaamia Clifton, Karachi) and Mufti Abdul Momin Bangash have declared that having a beard does not make a man an Islamic scholar and Junaid Jamshed (who has not been trained in a madressah) has no knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence.

According to a letter in “The News”, Junaid Jamshed advised students not to study science and technology but to devote all their time to study Islam.

Junaid Jamshed should repent for misleading the nation.

“He has no objection to appearing on TV (itself a heinous sin, according to most mullahs) and taking money to promote a product.”

Hopefully he will not go further and wear logos on his clothes to endorse and certify products as halal.

@ Hend: the mentality of our people is such that if a terribly obnoxious person (like a drunkard or a prostitute) suddenly becomes a born-again Muslim, he or she is revered like a great scholar. This hypocrite Junaid Jamshed used to be a member of one of those guitar-playing groups and one day he gave up singing and gyrating and grew a beard and now poses as an Islamic scholar. He has no objection to appearing on TV (itself a heinous sin, according to most mullahs) and taking money to promote a product. As I said earlier, the question is not whether something is “halal” or “haram”, does this nut have the authority to say whether it is “halal”?

Looks like the statement “Lays is produced in Pakistan by MUSLIM employees…” is not from Pepsi Cola but from a group on facebook. The origin of this connotation that, using Muslim employees makes the food Halal, is not traceable beyond that group.

Junaid Jumshed might have been referring to ingredients of the product.

I don’t know much about the controversy, if it is about him declaring it halal wrongly or if he has the authority to make such a declaration or if anyone should be making such declarations at all.

@ Hend: read my comment again. I don’t say that eating food prepared by non-Muslims is “haram”. It’s the Pepsi Cola Company (manufacturers of LAYS) that implies this by emphasizing that “Lays is produced in Pakistan by MUSLIM employees…”. I have no problem eating food in restaurants where non-Muslims are the chefs. It’s extremists like Junaid Jamshed (who should be in a mental asylum) who think a Muslim should not eat food made by non-Muslims.
