Is it a sin to enjoy life?

Why don’t the mullahs want us to enjoy life? Most of the time (like, when they aren’t stuffing themselves up with high-cholesterol food), they talk about what we should or shouldn’t do to avoid suffering the tortures of the damned after we’re dead. That means we should avoid listening to music, watching TV, reading newspapers, in fact not do anything which will divert our attention from what they’re preaching. And in the month of fasting, every preacher talks as if he has the keys to the gates of heaven. If you donate to his mosque or madressah, you’ll be welcomed in paradise seconds after your soul leaves your body. But if you watch TV or read the newspaper, your town will be struck by an earthquake even if all the men living there are pious people with long beards. So for your sins, your neighbours will also suffer. Just where is the logic in all this? Haven’t we been told ever since we were kids that the time of our death has been fixed before we were born, and we cannot die before our appointed time even if ten earthquakes or tsunamis strike wherever we are?

Since newspapers were non-existent in the seventh century, I don’t know why it should be a sin to read them. As for the common perception that listening to music is forbidden, it should be borne in mind that in the early days of Islam, there was only one place where a person could go and listen to music: a “maikhana” (a place like a bar) where you could also drink alcohol. Moreover, the number of things which are “haram” (forbidden) are clearly stated in the Holy Quran, and listening to music is not one of them. And if there are any doubts on the subject, here is something from Sahi Bukhari:

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.72 Narrated byAisha

Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly, “Musical instruments of Satan in the house of Allah’s Apostle !” It happened on the ‘Id day and Allah’s Apostle said, “O Abu Bakr! There is an ‘Id for every nation and this is our ‘Id.”

I hope this will be enough to convince the doubters that listening to music and enjoying life are not sins.

Adnan, its media which is the last help in saving us from becoming a retard Saudi gov. or like the ALIENS-FROM-MARS Taliban’s.

I wonder why these Mullah bhais use TV and RADIO for even their GOOD purpose. They are dual-tounge evils who know very well their stupid arguments on MUSIC,TV etc have failed so they are not only confused by have become patients too not knowing what to do.

And i dont expect now you to tell me what ALLOWABLE/NOT ALLOWABLE uses ISLAM has told us about TV and MUSIC.

Fahd, well said plus “enjoyment” is very relative. For instance I like to enjoy my time in computer related stuff and trying different software development stuff( yeah this is Insane but then you should not expect sanity from IT people! 😀 ).

One man’s enjoyment could be pain in neck for others. If someone in my Mohallah listening music in louder voice for sake of entertainment and enjoyment then it’s becoming reason of making sick to someone else in neighborhood.

You gave example of music therapy, i could give you more concrete example of Alcohol which is used in medicine, does it mean we should start using it?

Bhai merey Mirchain Khanay k saath he Khao tu achi lagti hain, khali mirchain khao gey tu tumhari naak, kaan sab jaga se dhuwan nikley ga. Agar koi tumhari theory follow karay tu uska hafta me saat din pait kharab rahey ga 😀

Is enjoying life really and only equivalent to listening music, dancing, drinking, mating, gampling?

Why not get out of this vicious narrow-minded satanic circle, and why not think out of the box?

Why not enjoy life by offering the Namaz with sheer soul and mind?

Why not enjoy life by comprehending the life through Quran?

Why not enjoy life by following the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH)?

Why not enjoy life through lslam to enjoy the life hereafter?

First of all, those who think music is not allowed should be told that nowadays music is used as therapy for many diseases, including Parkinson’s disease. Secondly, if anyone is depressed, there’s nothing like music to make him well again. So I suggest to all you killjoys who don’t know how to enjoy life to at least listen to some soothing music or watch a good TV program or even see a good movie occasionally. As for the question about where I read about not being allowed to read newspapers, I was with the Tableeghi Jamaat chaps during Haj for three weeks and they told me it’s a sin (probably because there are pictures of girls in them which would corrupt me).

Shakir, one day you will seek justification of Homosexuality in Islam like Asra Nomani and would say “It’s allowed in Islam”.

Dude, be brave, don’t seek refuge in Islam for your personal fantasies. Nobody cares u listen music, drink alcohol or have sex with someone out of any relation but don’t try to justify your personal fantasies with in Islam. This is very coward thing.

MB, people like you make me belief the decline education system of Pakistan which produces kids like you who lack the ability to comprehend things around them and fall in trap with what they see on TV or other media sources. May God save Pakistan from youth like you-Ameen

Dude, I agree with half of what you have said, that the mullahs speak like they have the keys to heaven, though I don’t know which mullah you follow who has declared reading a newspaper to be a sin (reference please?).

The half that I don’t agree with is your justification of ‘enjoying life’ – everyone has their own convenient interpretation of halal and haram – but IMHO, nowhere in quran or hadees does it say that music was prohibited just because it led to drinking… can you explain what makes you say this?

Music is certainly allowed in Islam… but… it seems to have a few constraints. Nothing besides a beat (duff), and no vulgar/suggestive lyrics – so if you can find (and like) such music, I don’t think the mullahs will bother you.

But if your definition of ‘enjoying life’ consists of watching Shakira shake her hips (and since its happening in your own home, so no risk of you going anywhere near alcohol), then mullahs will have a problem with you, and rightly so, as its their job to preach and point such things out.

You can, of course, say a big F*CK YOU to the molvees and continue your quest for a fun life by watching MTV/VH1, but PLEASE don’t twist religion and create yet another interpretation to suit yourself.

If I may ask a question, can you post the kind of music/bands that you enjoy here?

Well, you raise some interesting points. I personally think its a controversial thing as far as music is concerned and there are different Hadiths that strengthen both points of view. Maybe it would help if you watch this episode of Alif where prominent musicians and religious scholars argue on the status of music in Islam.

Salaam. I wonder aloud if you are aware that there are ample evidence that music is not permissable. I wonder aloud if you are aware that in the same Ahadith collection that you quoted to prove your point, that there are explicit ahadith that conflict with what you say. I wonder aloud if you are aware that there is more than 1000 years of scholarship that justify the non-permissability of music. For your information, here is a hadith in Sahih Bukhari, Kitabul Ashribah (Book 69):

Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash’ari (Allah be pleased with him) reports that he heard the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) say:

“From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, ‘Return to us tomorrow.’ Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection.”
