Is it a sin to enjoy life?

Why don’t the mullahs want us to enjoy life? Most of the time (like, when they aren’t stuffing themselves up with high-cholesterol food), they talk about what we should or shouldn’t do to avoid suffering the tortures of the damned after we’re dead. That means we should avoid listening to music, watching TV, reading newspapers, in fact not do anything which will divert our attention from what they’re preaching. And in the month of fasting, every preacher talks as if he has the keys to the gates of heaven. If you donate to his mosque or madressah, you’ll be welcomed in paradise seconds after your soul leaves your body. But if you watch TV or read the newspaper, your town will be struck by an earthquake even if all the men living there are pious people with long beards. So for your sins, your neighbours will also suffer. Just where is the logic in all this? Haven’t we been told ever since we were kids that the time of our death has been fixed before we were born, and we cannot die before our appointed time even if ten earthquakes or tsunamis strike wherever we are?

Since newspapers were non-existent in the seventh century, I don’t know why it should be a sin to read them. As for the common perception that listening to music is forbidden, it should be borne in mind that in the early days of Islam, there was only one place where a person could go and listen to music: a “maikhana” (a place like a bar) where you could also drink alcohol. Moreover, the number of things which are “haram” (forbidden) are clearly stated in the Holy Quran, and listening to music is not one of them. And if there are any doubts on the subject, here is something from Sahi Bukhari:

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.72 Narrated byAisha

Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly, “Musical instruments of Satan in the house of Allah’s Apostle !” It happened on the ‘Id day and Allah’s Apostle said, “O Abu Bakr! There is an ‘Id for every nation and this is our ‘Id.”

I hope this will be enough to convince the doubters that listening to music and enjoying life are not sins.

When a person commits a sin (may Allah save us all) believing that a sin is being committed and feels regret and remorse in the heart, then this is far better then committing the sin and believing it to be halal. In the former situation, only one sin is being committed, and it is very likely that the individual may repent out of the remorse felt in the heart. In the latter case, however, in addition to the sin being committed, there is the greater sin of trying to justify it. Normally, such an individual does not receive the guidance to repent from his sin. (May Allah save us all, Ameen)

One of the harms of music is that it distracts one from his Creator. It serves as a temporary means of pleasure which makes one forget who he really is and why he was created. He forgets the noble purpose.

One of the main causes for the decline of the Muslims is their involvement in useless entertainment. Today we see that Muslims are involved, and at the forefront perhaps, of many immoralities and evils. The spiritual power which once was the trait of a Muslim is nowhere to be seen. One of the main reasons for this is music and useless entertainment.

Regardless of whether anyone believes that something is haram or not his/her eman will become weak if he/she indulges in it.

Allah Most High says: And there are among men, those that purchase idle tales, to mislead (men) from the path of Allah and throw ridicule. For such there will be a humiliating punishment (Surah Luqman, V. 6). This verse was revealed in relation to singing and musical instruments (Tafsir ibn Kathir, 3/442)

Abd Allah Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: Verily Allah has forbidden alcohol, gambling, drum and guitar, and every intoxicant is haram (Musnad Ahmad & Sunan Abu Dawud).

Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ashari (Allah be pleased with him) reports that he heard the Messenger of Allah say: There will appear people in my Ummah, who will hold adultery, silk, alcohol and musical instruments to be lawful (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Abd Allah ibn Masud (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: Song makes hypocrisy grow in the heart as water does herbage (Sunan al-Bayhaqi).

Those who think music is allowed in islam usually present the Hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari in which two girls were singing in the presence of the Messenger of Allah

To begin with these young girls were singing without any unlawful musical instruments and secondly, the content of the song was regarding war, thus perfectly lawful. Also, they were not professional singers as the words of the Hadith clearly indicate. Some try to justify music with the Hadith in which the permissibility of playing the tambourine (daf) is mentioned. However, as stated in the works of the Fuqaha, to play the tambourine is permissible at weddings, as it is not designed for sole entertainment and pleasure, rather for announcement, etc.

MB, media saved from Taliban? Huh? do you ever make sense?

Your bitching capability always stops you to comprehend things properly. We, the kMB readers have been experiencing it for ages. In short such people are called “potty mouths”.

I don’t see anyone asks to ban TV, if one does than such personal is not less fanatic than you who also promotes extremism by leftists. Yes it was always asked to avoid misusage of TV or media and this is not different than your Momma asks you to use Knife to peel potatoes rather killing your neighborhood. I am sure you wouldnt use same extreme sentences for her.

I am least bothered what you follow or not, even I am careless whether you wana follow Islam or not because Islam rather prefers quality or quantity so even if we getrid of residue in the form of pseudo intellectuals like you than it would be more good for us.

Music is certainly allowed in Islam… but… it seems to have a few constraints. Nothing besides a beat (duff), and no vulgar/suggestive lyrics , the famous one is ‘nashyid’ and it became haram when listening to music makes you carried away and neglected you responsibilities such as salat…not doing it on time just bcoz you enjoying listening to the music…

Be moderate in whatever you do …from my 2 cents.
