As opposition is in great confusion, and even the genuine opposition which comprises of Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan, and nationalist leaders are finding it hard to truly mobilise the people for the struggle of democracy, it’s a fine time for Musharraf to gain some points in the eyes of uncomfortable West by parting with his skin.
Musharraf has surely dug himself a hole, by imposing emergency and by attacking the moderate forces in the country. That and now our godfathers in United States are openly blaming Uncle Bush that he has been conned by the Musharraf, and Musharraf hasn’t done enough to fight the US war on terrorism despite of milking Uncle for a whooping amount of $10 billion, most of it unaccounted for.
Another thing which is stinging the masters is the fear that Musharraf is paving the way for the extremist Islamist parties by suppressing the so-called liberal and moderate forces in the country. This image has been strengthened by the ban on media and the muzzling of judges and beating of lawyers, civil society and the political workers. Now whenever they mention Pakistan, they say “nuclear-armed†Pakistan, and they are finding it a golden opportunity to control the nukes of Pakistan in the name of safety and security.
Anyway, he our generalissmo doesn’t mind that. As PCO CJP Mr. Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar has instructed election commission to go ahead with the notificiation of Pervez Musharraf as the president of Pakistan, and has dismissed all the petitions against him, would it be a surprise if he doenst shed his uniform even now?
