Why don’t Sikhs get a haircut and trim their beards?

There was a case in Canada where a Sikh showed up at home clean shaven and with a haircut, and when asked why, said that a bunch of Canadians beat him up and cut his beard and hair from various places. In order to fix that he was left with no option but to get a haircut and shave. The parents went to the police, and after investigation it was found that the guy was lying, to which he later admitted.

This is the height of desperation that can be found among modern Sikhs. I’m sure hair in a turban does not feel comfortable, so the question is, why do Sikhs not get a haircut and shave or at least shape their beards properly. Is it because Guru Nanak said so. Even if he did, he was only a Guru and not a Prophet, so why does what he says have so much importance. Another question is that why are Sikhs allowed to remove hair on the body if they are not allowed to do so elsewhere. One version I have heard is that Guru Nanak said, “Take care of your ‘bal’ as in ‘bal-bachche’ (kids) and not hair. What do Sikhs have to say about this?

Is there some kind of punishment in Sikhism for getting a haircut and trimming the beard. Will Sikhs burn in hell for doing so?

@ Mr. Lakhani: I think a lot of people, including non-Muslims, keep a beard because they get tired of shaving. The last thing that men want to do when they wake up early in the morning, half dead with sleep, is to spend 10 minutes shaving. It is a pain. We all know it. My personal opinion is that a beard can’t be called unhygenic just because food gets stuck in it.

@ Shamsa: Thank you for your comment. I think I’m being misunderstood here. My intention is only to ask simple and straightforward questions.

Yusha, according to ceratain mullahs, we should not shave our faces, but why is there no objection to shave heads, etc? As far as hygience is concerned, in good restaurants, bearded waiters have to wear a cloth over their beards so that hair does not get into the food. And I have seen men’s beards touching the food when they bend to fill their plates at wedding dinners. Isn’t this unhygienic?

@ Murthy: Muslims shape their beards properly, unlike Sikhs.

@ Manveen: From your name I am guessing you are a girl, so I would not expect you to know how uncomfortable men must feel with those moustaches covering their lips, and how diry and sweaty hair must get when it is wrapped in a turban. It is not only unnatural but also looks gross. I never said that the version I heard is correct, only that I would like Sikhs’ opinion on that. Also, if hair is such a gift that it must never be cut, please explain to me why hair on the body can be shaved?

@ Hamid: I’m just asking simple questions out of curiousity, nothing more.

@ Raman: Thanks for the info.

It was not Guru Nanak but Guru Gobind Singh who asked his followers to keep hair and beard. U will be surprised to know that all of these followers were hindus or from non sikh identity. This was done to form a army that is distinguished from the crowd to protect hindus and muslims. Yes sikhs do cut their hair to show so called mordenity but there are also those who get back to turban after showing their hair off and correct their mistake – I myself one of them.

Its better that we leave faith to its followers, because where your spirit finds peace, you go for it without reason and justification.
We in Pakistan respect whether its Sikhs who wear turban

According to Sikhism, Hair is a gift from God, therefore why should anyone throw it away by cutting it? Sikhs live the way God made humans and never cut their hair. For Sikhs hair is the symbol of love for God and the respect for everything He has given us. The way God made us is the most beautiful of all. To Christians, even the Bible says, “God loves us and cares so much about us that even all the hairs of our head has well counted” (Matt.10:30).

Note: It would have been better if you just did your research before posting this article based on few assumptions and your so called “one version that you heard”. I would recommend that you remove the article before you offend numerous people out there.

@Murthy: Beard is not compulsory for Muslims, although some mullahs say it is. Sikhs are barred by their religion to shave their hair. Some Sikhs (about 25%) have started shaving their beards and having haircuts, but the majority still follow what the Guru ordered. I think every person has the right to do what his religion says.

    Dudde,
I never thought why muslims(not all) don’t shave their beards and grow bird-nest’s.

Lemme think of some stupid logic and make a brilliant post , just like you did.

    On a lighter side,
    I’m jus kiddin man,
I didnt know if your post should b taken on a lighter note/ serious one.
I usually take it on lighter side.
But, since it is in a place like this, where people are so SERIOUS, I too had to post something like that.
    Nothing Personal.
