Why are Sikhs not allowed to eat halal meat?

Years ago, in the book “Bhowani Junction” (which was made into a film and shot in Lahore), I read about Sikhs not being allowed to eat “halal” meat. I thought the writer might have made a mistake, since Sikhs (believing in one God) are closer to Muslims than Hindus. But now I have come across someone else saying the same thing, in fact it is Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the supreme temporal body of the Sikhs. In today’s Times of India, there is an article entitled “Those who trim hair, beard are not true Sikhs: SGPC”,. I have no quarrel with that, since this is the only visible feature of Sikhs which makes them stand out from others.. But then the article says, (and this I cannot understand), “Sikhs should abstain from liquor, cigar and halal meat”.

Of course, what they eat or drink is their own business, but why this ban on halal meat? If there’s a Sikh scholar who’s reading this, I’ll be grateful if he can explain this peculiar tenet for being a true Sikh.

    Sikhs are just uncircumcised Muslims.

I think he asked a sincere question for which he deserves a qualified reply. Please be nice when responding! For us halaal meat is wrong however Sikh Gurus never interfered with religious beliefs of other communities so let them respect their views.

looking at balbir explanation that gives certain meaning. But Why some of the Sikhs went so crazy about the question being asked ??? it might be the reason that they have very little knowledge about their own religion.

Hello Shakhir. First of all why are you so concerned about the Halaal Meat. As per my knowledge treating your taste buds with delicacy at the cost of somebodys agony, pain and death is not what is taught in sikhism. The SGPC is a governing body but at times is influenced. Sikhs are close to both Muslims and Hindus But very far from oppresors. Let me know if it makes sense to you.

I believe it has to with killing the animal for food with the least amount of suffering to the animal. The belief is that “jhatka” meat kills the animal immediately, while the halal process prolongs the suffering of the animal before death. Other religions in the world hold similar views, too.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji says, these Muslim rulers and Kaazi take all sorts of bribes, still pretend to be attached to God by reading namaaz five times a day. These Muslim rulers have employed corrupt khatris who also torture the poor but show the world they are men of God with cotton threads around their necks. The brahmins go and recite prayers at the houses of these khatris and take offerings, but they are also part of the crime as they consume materials that have been earned by sin. These offerings that they take are impure and so their profession (of performing prayer ceremonies). This has gone to a level where they don’t even have any shame, neither they are attached to their religion, falsehood is prevelant everywhere. These people have got cotton threads around their necks, yet they are weidling knives and do not miss any oppoortunity to do excesses against anyone. They go to the muslim rulers, the very muslims they refer as malechhs, still worship the puraans and believe they follow them strictly. Not only that, they eat the haalal meat prepared by these muslims, yet where they sit they draw lines around that area and say the place is pure. They forbid others to enter that area they sit in and say if someone enters that area, their area and the (haalal) meat they consume would become impure. They have such impure bodies, commit sinful acts, and wash their sinful mouth with water. (From Prof. Sahib Singh’s Guru Granth Darpan)

Sorry for the hasty translation, but i think what is being said is the meat that is prepared AND the ones who consume both pretend to be men of God, but in fact they are both impure because of the hypocrisy that surrounds it. The muslims who prepare halaal pretend to be men of Allah and in His name they prepare the meat but their actions speak otherwise, so that kind of (outwardly) purity is useless.

By the way, the muslims you have spoken to are lying to you. Halaal is slow death, the animal is not finished with one swift blow, they make it suffer – I have seen that myself with my own eyes. And besides, as Degh-Tegh-Fathe ji said: eating meat, halaal or otherwise is just wrong! But that is a seperate issue, a controversial one at that so I wont go into that.

Sorry for an immature answer, it just reflects my matt! I am sure the learned members here will be able to answer this in a much better way!

    Fateh Jeo!
