Why are Muslims so cruel to animals?

Why are Muslims so cruel to animals? What does a Muslim do when he sees a dog? He picks up a stone and throws it at the poor creature. I once owned a salt works in the coastal area of Karachi. There was plenty of wild life there in 1978, but a few years later, most of it had disappeared. I remember large lizards (more than three feet in length) and colored snakes, all which had been wiped out by humans before 1991 (when I left the salt trade).

One day I came across a worker trying to kill a chameleon. “Why do you want to kill it? What harm has he done to you?” I asked. “Why does he keep changing colors?” the man retorted. I managed to convince him not to kill the poor creature, but I know that the minute I left the place, he went ahead and killed it anyway. Back in 2003, when I went to live in Block 5 of Clifton, a couple of dogs in the street outside the apartment complex became very friendly with me. They would accompany us whenever I and my wife went for a walk. Maybe they thought I cared about animals because apparently I was the only one who hadn’t tried to hit them with stones. The watchmen at the gate would be appalled when they saw me petting the dogs (who, according to their primitive way of thinking, are unclean creatures). A few days later, the dogs disappeared. Someone had shot the dogs, said the guards. I am fairly certain it was one of them.

I know there is a Hadith about angels staying away from houses where dogs are kept, but no one knew this when I was growing up. We had a couple of dogs, as well as exotic birds and peacocks (which we kept in a large cage). And I knew many other families who also kept dogs as pets. I have also heard another Hadith about a prostitute going straight to heaven because she fed a hungry dog, but apparently this one is ignored by Muslims. In Saudi Arabia, the only dog I saw was one being taken for a walk by an American (in Jeddah). In practically all countries where Muslims live, no one cares for animals.

@General Khan: Somehow I just KNEW you were a German Shepherd kinda guy. Mama bought Pop a German Shepherd pup in Bavaria just before I was born; when we came to the States, the dog was quarantined for 30 days, and Pop drove 1500 miles on winding, 1952, pre-Interstate roads to go get her. The local dogs thought she was cool–she barked in German–and we had her descendents until 1980.

@Momina: CAT GIRL! Gimme FIVE, Sister! My old cat Bud-Bud lost his last battle with the raccoons in my creek about 3 years ago, age 16. He weighed 16 lbs., 42 inches long stretched out, and could carve his initials on any dog’s behind. He could whip me 9 falls out of 10, and was smarter than most people I know.

@Javed: I was in an Asian country which will remain unnamed and once watched a bunch of local carpenters chasing a small dog with a big stick. When I passed back by a half hour later, they had a little fire going and were turning the carcass on a spit. I had my .45 on me and it was all I could do to keep from cheerfully shooting all of them.

She gave the dog water to drink. And you are correct, she went to heaven because of this good deed.

    > We had a couple of dogs, as well as exotic birds and peacocks (which we kept in a large cage).

Is keeping birds and peacocks locked in a cage not cruelty?

I think people throw stones at dogs because they are afraid it might bite them.

@SL: So you have zeroed it to dogs. If you are worried about not seeing dogs in Saudi then you are mistaken. There are more than that one dog you saw with the American guy. It is simple. Americans prefer dogs as pets. We do not usually. I adore some dogs but I always have this thought in mind that this animal has real sharp teeth and if he goes berserk for some reason (remember the lady who had the first face transplant in the world??) i won’t be left with much happiness…

Similarly, we do not see many camels (or any other animal that is a usual pet in the East) in the streets of U. S., do we? It is simply different culture.

@JKS: What you call farm animals are considered pets in our place.

And it is not Muslims who eat dogs.

I agree with Jawed that if your topic was just about cruelty with animals it would have been a great topic. Your baseless accusations against Muslims specifically make it unfavourable but, of course, controversial.

You will get a lot of response but few of them would be favourable.

Be broadminded and don’t be prejudiced.

Oh and why do Arabs hit the camel with the stick?? The answer is a question: why does everyone hit the horses with whips to make it run faster??

No one does it to hurt them and at times the whip/stick doesn’t touch the horse or camel. They just make a sound to push the animal forward. Some psychological set up. Should i go into details?

Islam does not teach us to hate animals or wipe them out. If any one does it it is his own action and should not be labelled islamic.

it goes down to education and tolerance…….Animals are also God’s beings. We’re just to stupid to remember this. We humans are no more better than any other creature out there.

At least giraffes or sea lions arent bombing eachother and destroying their habitats.

Incidentally, I keep two dogs — a german shepherd and a half-beagle half pug (puggle). If I saw somebody mistreating a dog or even “using it as delicacy” — i would make delicacy of him/her using my 12 gauge shotgun

I agree with the underlying message in your post i.e. cruelty to animals. I do, however, beleive that inadvertantly you have fallen prey to age old problem of linking local and regional view, practices, customs and traditions with a particular religion. Their are living civilisations that eat a dog as a delicacy (as somone who has always had a dog I find it abhorant) – but this has nothing to do with their religion I beleive.

@ Hassan Ali & Momina: so why are there no dogs in Saudi cities? Because they’ve been wiped out due to prejudice. Why do Arab sheiks hit camels with sticks to make them run faster in camel races? And as for dogs being unclean, I think some humans are dirtier than dogs. I remember reading many years ago that a dog’s saliva is very clean and used as medicine in some primitive societies.

@Hassan: Do you see the animals you mentioned as friends, sometimes? As creatures with hearts and minds and emotions and preferences–individual personalities?

I note that most of the species you mentioned are farm animals, and not really what we would consider in the west as “pets,” except maybe the horse, which is really like a large dog, to my thinking, being very intelligent and capable of co-operative interaction with humans, like riding and hunting. Horses and dogs are able to make judgments and act without instructions for every move, suspending their own instincts.

I recently read an article about a fatwa issued in the US that clearly defined relaxed Islamic rules about dogs, after an incident at a college in Michigan, I think it was, when a Muslim student stoned a professor’s dog; the professor was epileptic and the dog was trained to somehow help if the professor suddenly had a siezure.

Dogs, particularly, being territorial predators, make superlative guards if you share your home with them, and will protect your home and children fiercely, sometimes with their lives. Their hearing is incredibly good, and they can detect intruders long before any human can, and will warn you by tensing or growling.

Dogs’ sense of smell is so good that they have been known to bite off skin tumors from their masters–they knew that the cancer didn’t belong there–didn’t smell right, and perceived it as an evil vermin.

I agree with Hassan Ali that your article is very biased. Nothing new about that.

You are making a personal issue into a religious issue. Many Human Beings (not specifically Muslims) are afraid of dogs as they have had not-so-pleasant experiences with them.

Obviously, a person would tend to not like snakes. But most would run away from the place instead of killing them. Yes, if one is trapped they would kill. These are human instincts not Muslim instincts (or maybe you don’t consider Muslims to be part of the human race).

Did the person killing the chameleon say that ‘I am a Muslim and this is my duty to kill chameleons’??

Dogs are unclean and it has been proven scientifically (also stated in a hadith). But no Muslim kills them. Preferably, they stay away from them. Their choice why does it bother anyone. All animals are to be treated with kindness. You love dogs, keep them all with you. My Uncle always feared dogs. In order to kill his fear (not the animal) he started taming some dogs that leap at the very sight of him now.

I personally have partridges, grey francolins, pheasants and cats in my home (they also belong to the animal kingdom, y’know). I adore them and am too emotionally attached to them. I don’t remember killing any of them.

A friend had one of those large lizards as a pet. Shocking revelation: she is a Muslim.

In short, you are very misinformed about Muslims.

    Dear Shakir Lakhani!!!

I found your article very biased. The title was “Why are Muslims so cruel to animals” but you only mentioned 3 animals (Dogs, Snakes, Lizards), which considered to be harmful and most of us muslims don’t like them. But still it does not depict the true picture.

Horses, Camels, Sheeps, Goats, Cows, Pigeons, Chickens also are animals / birds, we muslim love to have around.

In arab countries, camels, eagles / hawks are the most expensive and admired animals and birds and sheikhs spend millions on them…

    So plz do not misguide non-muslims / non-pakistanis about us… Thanks…
