Why Afridi Bites the Ball?

Shahid Afridi bites the ballWhat on earth will be more embarrassing for the cricket loving nation than this? Shahid Afridi has been caught by TV camera suspect as tampering the ball by biting it with his teeth in the dramatic fifth and final ODI at the WACA Ground in Perth. Television cameras caught the captain taking two vigorous bites along the seam of the ball at the end of the 40th over. The ball was immediately examined by the umpires and replaced. One of the more bizarre incidents to have been witnessed in international cricket which no one wants to watch again.

As a consequence of this Shahid Afridi has been banned for two T20 matches. Afridi apologized for his actions last night claiming they were borne out of frustration. The desperation to win the match by hook or crook was evident from his behavior showing that the moral of the team is at lowest level now. Though the shameful act did not justify it. Just for a second thought it might be intentional as to keep his record of being the most successful T20 skipper for Pakistan team unharmed.

Whatever the reason may be, desperation to win or for the sake of records, his act is a sheer disappointment for his fans as well as the nation. Wake up PCB!

Maddie: Rameez Raja is not God. In one of my first comments I mentioned that Wasim Akram invented the art of reverse swing. When the English bowlers couldn’t play him and other Pakistani fast bowlers, they started accusing them of ball-tampering. Other teams also joined in the propaganda, while the bloody hypocrites would ball tamper themselves.

    @Maddie

Why is the Pak team most mentioned when we talk abt ball tampering?

what I believe is their ability to reverse swing the ball on fast and bouncy pitches……..

Ball-tampering is not the heinous crime it is being made out to be; it’s time it had official sanction is the tagline of cricinfo article…rest everyone can read.

This from a Pakistani site, TheNews.com.pk, but based on the same cricinfo article:

    @ Hina and all others.

Hina, as I said I’m not trying to hide the Tendulkar issue. Yes, Tendulkar was claimed guilty by the match referee but after thorough investigation by the ICC the ban was lifted.

Wiki clearly mentions the ban imposed on Tendulkar and then states that it was lifted. So, I don’t think my guts will be required here.

As for the other 5 Indian players, they were disciplined for excessive appealing and not ball tampering. I’m sure you must have checked that and if not, then you will do so now.

Anyway, I believe we are again indulging in a slanging match and going away from the original argument that I had posted i.e. Why is the Pak team most mentioned when we talk abt ball tampering.

And I think I might have found the answer to my question. So thank you everyone for your comments. Those who are interested, read the latest article by Ramiz Raja on Cricinfo:

    http://www.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/447127.html

    Ramiz Raja admits:

“Afridi comes from an era, a cricketing culture, where ball-tampering is considered a normal cricket activity, the done thing on flat Pakistani pitches – an art form and not a sin. It’s been a part of the Pakistan team’s standard operating procedure.”

Hina, Shakir and Mohammed, I don’t have a login for Chowrangi so unfortunately, like you, I am unable to highlight the key words/phrases.

But seriously guys read that statement. For a moment keep your mind blank and read the Wiki article and this article, and don’t read it as a Pakistani (and I’m only saying that so that you are not biased, please don’t be offended in any way).

In my original comment on February 6th, 2010 13:37 GMT, I had ended with the statement, “There has to be a reason why players from only 1 country are regularly in the eye of controversies.”

Well Ramiz Raja has provided the answer…

    I had mentioned that it’s a long debate………

Anyway as far as Ban on Tendulkar was lifted is concerned read this,

The South African Press Association reported that Denness found Tendulkar guilty after viewing video tapes of the incident. The sentence is suspended until the end of the year. He has also been fined 75 per cent of his match fee. Denness also reportedly disciplined five other India players, including Sourav Ganguly, their captain. Ganguly received a suspended sentence of one Test match and two one-day internationals until the end of the year for not controlling his players.

Can u have the guts to add this detail to wiki? I will provide u the link of it .

    @Hina

I was hoping that no one argues the integrity of Wiki (especially not you since I feel most of your comments are sensible). But anyways, you are right when you say that Wiki can be edited by anyone. However, you must also be knowing that when you need to edit Wiki you also need to provide references for what you write.

And yes I did read the comments about the Pak team and I’m not debating them. All I was wondering was why has the Pak team been most talked about when you talk of ball tampering.

As for the Sachin Tendulakr episode, the answer can be found on another Wiki page..

“In the second test of India’s 2001 tour of South Africa, Tendulkar was given a suspended ban of one game in light of alleged ball tampering. Television cameras picked up images that suggested Tendulkar may have been involved in cleaning the seam of the cricket ball in the second test match between India and South Africa at St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth.[75] This can, under some conditions, amount to altering the condition of the ball. The match referee Mike Denness found Sachin Tendulkar guilty of ball tampering charges and handed him a one Test match ban. After a thorough investigation, the International Cricket Council revoked the official status of the match and the ban on Tendulkar was lifted.”

Wikipedia can be edited by any one………

The page u mentioned also quotes,

The Pakistani cricket team were arguably the first to come under scrutiny, when they were together in 1992 accused of ball-tampering to achieve large amounts of reverse swing. However, no evidence of wrongdoing was ever found in that series. Because of these allegations, in 1996, Imran Khan sued Ian Botham for slander and libel in a British court, and was awarded £400,000.

It is also interesting that it has nothing ab8 Sachin………How could it be neutral than?

    its a long debate

@ Hina, Yusha, Hend and all others

I guess a lot of slanging has gone about in this article, so may be it’s time for some neutral research.

Hina, I am unable to comprehend Urdu so I took a cue form you and googled “Ball tampering in Cricket”. I wasn’t surprised to find that the first link was from Wikipedia; which I consider to be not only a neutral source (in all aspects) but also a rather well-researched one (And I hope and pray that none of you start to argue with me on that, at least).

Anyways, interestingly in the article on Wiki, the Pak team/bowlers have been mentioned the maximum number of times, followed by England. The Rahul Dravid incident has also been mentioned.

Now, Hend and Yusha have mentioned Waqar Younis a number of times in their comments (Even Hina has mentioned him once). Well, the article has a separate sentence paragraph which says and I quote,

“Waqar Younis became the first player to receive a suspension for ball-tampering after a match in 2000.”

I do believe that Pak has produced some real good bowlers (Although I can think of only 2…Wasim and Saqlain), what I do wonder is why in a neutral article have Pak bowlers been most alleged for ball tampering.

I refuse to put that down to favouritism or partiality…that would have been possible had it been players from a certain region e.g. the subcontinent v/s the western nations or blacks v/s whites etc etc etc but not 1 country v/s 9 others…

Once again, let me insist that this article is from a neutral, respected and well-renowned source (please find link below). There has to be a reason why players from only 1 country are regularly in the eye of controversies. Food for thought…

Ball tampering and its history for those who are continuously blaming Pakistani bowlers for it………..and If u cant read urdu I’ll translate it .

  10. Mohammad Yusha Avatar

@Hend: Since you think Shoaib Akhtar is the fattest, I was correct when I said you need to get your eyes examined. Pakistan has produced once great fast bowler after another. Why doesn’t India produce good fast bowlers? I know you won’t answer my question since that will put too much strain on your tiny brain.
