Where Do We Stand

The word “ostentation” surrounds us in every walk of our life. What ever we do, our focus remains on ostentation, it gives us pleasure and the sense of satisfaction. We all love to pay more and more in the name of “BRANDS” rather than purchasing the same local commodity. Eid is about to come and all the shopping centers are jam packed, rush is especially on big shopping malls like Aashiyana, Forum, Park Towers, Zamzama etc, where it is impossible to find any thing in reasonable sum. We all are spending a huge sum of money daily on luxuries rather than necessities.

It has become difficult these days to enjoy “Chand Raat” on “Tariq Road” because of the menace of traffic jam. It is quite surprising that a large number of people in our poor developing country are able to afford latest modeled cars of Toyota and Hyundai, but I must say that all the credit goes to banks in this regards as they are offering big cars on lease at a very meager amount and are playing an active part in deceiving the other nations rather than reflecting the true picture our economic slump.

As Eid is near, in order to prove our selves as good Muslims in the front of ALLAH AL-MIGHTY, we are ready to buy the most expensive animal for slaughtering purpose, rather than giving a little sum of money to the needy and deserving hungry old people, paying the fees of any talented and willing poor student, helping any deserving patient in buying the expensive medicines and paying his hospital’s bill.

There is always an ongoing competition among the neighbors and family members regarding the “big and expensive”, animal for slaughtering on Eid-ul-Azha. We always consider that by slaughtering the most expensive animal, we will get the greatest “Sawab” and ALLAH AL-MIGHTY will like this act of ours… but is it what ALLAH has said to us?. Aren’t we responsible for feeding hungry little children, hasn’t ALLAH ordered us to spend our money in the most appropriate manner? Isn’t it our responsibility to spend our money in such a way that benefits the down trodden society? Has ALLAH said to us in QURAN that we should purchase the most expensive animals for slaughter? By doing this aren’t we portraying Islam in wrong manner? A large number of parties are thrown after Eid-ul-Azha of barbecue, because rather than distributing the meat in poor and needy people, we fill our deep freezers with the meat. Is this right?

Unfortunately most Pakistani Muslims think animal sacrifice is compulsory, although it is not one of the pillars of Islam. But we go on indulging in this ritual, rather than spending our money in helping the poor. I know a man who has bought sixty cows this year (each one a prized cow, costing seven lakh rupees). The street in which his house is located is closed for traffic because of so many animals in it. He does this because he is very, very rich and he wants to make sure that everyone knows this. People like him are the biggest contributors to inflation, and because of this excessive and unnecessary spending, the poor have to suffer.

People buying expensive animals is good IMHO, as the people SELLING them are not (probably) millionaires, so what’s wrong in money changing hands from the extremely rich to the extremely poor, even if the price itself is outrageous?
