What does Ali Saleem, a.k.a., “Begum Nawazish Ali†want? Let’s analyze. Does he/ she want some people to pity his possible deep emotional trauma; to ponder and sympathize on just what is it that compels him/ her to dress as a woman and put on that highly entertaining façade in front of the dear masses. That beneath all that “glamorous†appeal, there ‘lies’ a sober, sensible man in search of a maiden who would become his/ her wife? We learnt long ago that people do antisocial things to attract attention. To create a stir. To be different. Breaking taboos.
What is the confusion here?
It is not freedom of expression. Everything has limits. We have all heard that going out of limits “disturbs the balanceâ€. Well, whose balance? Not the Universe’s. The person’s own balance. And that of the masses’ who fall for that imbalance. These entertainers sit on the threshold of great responsibility (namely, media), and actively participate in blowing away the last vestiges of sanity, if any left. Everyone who has been a guest on his/ her show has supported this growing insanity.
Oh, our enemies have succeeded. I love the movie “The Devil’s Advocate†for depicting exactly how Satan mislead and continues misleading man. John Milton (Al Pacino), the devil in the movie said:
“Who, in their right mind Kevin, could possibly deny the twentieth century was entirely mine.â€
And Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves), the protagonist replies:
“Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven”, is that it?â€
John Milton: “I’m here on the ground with my nose in it since the whole thing began. I’ve nurtured every sensation man’s been inspired to have. I cared about what he wanted and I never judged him. Why? Because I never rejected him. In spite of all his imperfections, I’m a fan of man! I’m a humanist. Maybe the last humanist.â€
Heck, I can go on and on and copy/ paste the dialogues from that thought provoking movie. Tossing another one for equal measure:
John Milton tells Kevin Lomax,
“You sharpen the human appetite to the point where it can split atoms with its desire; you build egos the size of cathedrals; fiber-optically connect the world to every eager impulse; grease even the dullest dreams with these dollar-green, gold-plated fantasies, until every human becomes an aspiring emperor, becomes his own god… and where can you go from there?â€
And:
“And as we’re straddling from one deal to the next, who’s got his eye on the planet, as the air thickens, the water sours, and even the bees’ honey takes on the metallic taste of radioactivity? And it just keeps coming, faster and faster. There’s no chance to think, to prepare; it’s buy futures, sell futures, when there is no future.â€
My apologies for deviating. There is a link though to how the devil deludes us and how we fall for his mischief. Even fools can see that this modus operandi of the media does not actually liberate our minds. It sends down a creepy feeling and an intuitive understanding that something has gone wrong here. Accepting the unacceptable and shunning the better ways is a serious point of concern and a glaring arrow pointing towards the menace we are facing. Our nation is ill.
