Western clothes banned in Peshawar!

I’ve lived in all major cities of Pakistan, including Peshawar, and I’ve always noticed that apart from Karachi and to some extent Lahore, most men prefer to wear the national dress. But now the men of Peshawar have been told to stop wearing the shirt and trousers and wear the shalwar kurta instead. This is to prevent any crazy Taliban type from attacking those who wear Western clothes (this has happened a few times in the past).

What I don’t understand is why the shalwar kurta is considered to be an Islamic dress. The shalwar kurta is actually of Iranian origin, first worn by non-Muslims who lived In Iran before Islam was adopted by the people. If there is such a thing as an Islamic dress, it should be the robe which is worn in Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries.

When I was in my teens, some mullahs used to say that Allah doesn’t accept the prayers of those who wear the Western dress when praying. But no one objects to Muslims wearing suit and tie praying in mosques in Turkey and Saudi Arabia (as well as in Malaysia and Singapore).

Similarly in Pakistan, mullahs say that women should not wear jeans, but I have seen women wearing jeans under their abayas while walking around the Holy Kaaba. The truth is, there is no such thing as an Islamic dress (or a Hindu or Christian dress, for that matter).

@ Yusha: do a google search on “men’s dresses” and this is one of the things you’ll get:
    “Mens Dresses
Mens dresses offered by us specifically meet the dressing needs of men. Our process expertise allow us to supply these in both casual and formal finishes. The range offered under this include formal or casual shirts, pants or that of pajamas or trousers”.
Now if you will still persist in advising us to ask English teachers, I’ll give you the name of a good psychiatrist who will cure you of this obsession about dresses meaning female clothing only.

Ask any English teacher in the U.K., and he/she will tell you that the word dress is used for female clothing.

Shakir has it right. “Dress” is clothes in general. “A dress” is a woman’s garment, open at the bottom, however long.
There’s a tribe in Africa, where it’s very hot, who wear nothing but a string around the waist, covering nothing of any interest. Without this string they feel naked, and are embarrassed to be seen in public without it. People are so funny.

@ Yooshoo: These definitions are from the Oxford English Dictionary (1): Garment for a woman or girl (2): Clothes, especially outer garments, for either men or women. Hope you’ll sleep well tonight.

I don’t think you’ve ever heard of Shakespeare. He said, “the apparel oft proclaims the man”. Apparel means dress. If you know how to use a dictionary, look it up.

English teachers in the West say that it is attributed to female attire.

Yusha: the meaning of “dress” is “Clothing; apparel.” It can apply to both men and women.

i was just in Peshawar. I wore torn jeans, military fatigues, nike jog shorts, and other so called Western clothes, and i was just fine. Taleban know that we Loathe them, their threats don’t mean shit to us. We are armed and will defend ourselves. Peshawar is more liberal than what media shows. It is true we prefer to wear shalwar especially in summer when it gets so hot.

    >>>What I don’t understand is why the shalwar kurta is considered to be an Islamic dress.

Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) used to wear a kurta habitually, and he wore a shalwar once. This is why it is considered sunnah, or Islamic clothing (Not dress. Since you keep talking about good English, and correct others, you should know that the word dress is attributed to female clothing.)

    >>>Mullahs say that women should not wear jeans, but I have seen women wearing jeans under their abayas.

What women wear under their abayas does not have any importance.
