Sugar Crisis In Pakistan; Is There Any Other Name For A Thief

Well, undoubtedly Pakistan is a place where new records are set every day, but the recent crisis where the entire lot of country’s sugar disappeared is one of its kind. It was amazing how the crack down was launched, and in no time media screens were flashing with reports that thousands of sacks hidden from the public eye were discovered.

But like always, out of unknown reasons the accused party, which especially included Sugar Mills Foundation, were brought to the table of talks with highest honor, and as if they have achieved a fantastic feat, and were awarded. This was no less than a “Mafia” style operation where you hijack the masses and get your illegitimate desires approved. It doesn’t matter who was behind this whole drama and to which party he/she belonged, but simply letting them run away with their crime is a shame.

It was amazing to see how Punjab Law Minister on air claimed that Mr. Wattoo has played an unfair game and his action has deprived masses of billion. Whatever is the reality, I don’t hold the establishment accused alone but I am ashamed that being Muslims just for the sake of money they have given sleepless nights to their needy brothers and sisters, and that too just before a holy month like Ramadan. What a shame. There is no other word to describe them as “criminal” and “thief” and they should be tried in the court of justice, no matter who they are.

@ Hend: why is it that prices of sugar and other eatables don’t shoot up in China? Because the government there is people-friendly? Or is it because they have the death penalty for corruption and profiteering?

The concept of profiteering from shortages is actually very very capitalist and an example of free trade, isn’t it.

In the USA the same thing happens. companies fire local staff and move operations to third world countries just for profit although they give false excuse of cost cutting. How come their CEO’s continue to receive million dollar salaries and company paid holidays to exotic places. BUT the moment some talks about protecting American jobs, these capitalists and the media controlled by them is up in arms about protecting free trade, enterprize and keeping away socialism.

Isn’t the whole healthcare insurance racket in the USA is operating with the blessings of politicians, powerful media and uninformed citizens? Frankly you can do anything in the USA as long as you have the media on your side to convince the people…who are supremely ignorant that what is good for them may not be good for capitalists and may sometimes verge on socialism.

In case you have noticed, the prices on sugar in USA have almost doubled in the last month.

Just a note: I am not in support of profeeting like this but just giving examples as it happens everywhere and mostly people are not even aware of it.

@Shakir: Ha-ha! Spoken like a true ascetic, but probably most people are not as self-disciplined as you are, and such a bobble in the sugar supply would be upsetting to an awful lot of them.

@Momina: Honey, you’re going to see a lot of things in your lifetime that seem crazy. Stick to your guns, you’ll be fine. 🙂

@Hamid: Yes, a lot of our commissioners are appointed, too, but hopefully they are well vetted and qualified before being given the reins. I think our “liege-lords” have a vested interest in keeping the country running; if really bad things happen to the food supply chain, chaos ensues in mere days. I don’t believe any of them really want that.

Do you think maybe you’re being “parented,” as in “children, too much sugar is not good for you!” ? Governments do that kind of thing more than most people would think.

dear,, when u have selected rather than elected people for whom only the completion of 5 year term in office is the goal,, laws make no difference

Shakir, it’s a slow stairway to hell when ownership is rewarded more than productivity; in such cases it is our own leaders who are our worst enemies, forget foreigners. It would probably require Holy intercession to put a cap on dividends, here or where you are. *Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?*–Who guards the guardians?

Lol, ok it’s not funny but it is so crazy!!

James: we do have laws but the feudals (who sit in parliament and make the laws) are the ones who own sugar mills and manipulate the prices. There’s nothing we can do to about it.

I think Pakistanis consume too much man-made sugar, which causes diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. There is already too much sugar in the foods we eat, particularly in white bread (flour, or “atta”). The only way to bring down prices is to stop eating or drinking stuff containing man-made sugar. I have been drinking sugar-less tea for ten years now, and I rarely eat puddings or ice-cream and I never take soft drinks. I’m not over-weight (unlike most of those who belong to my ethnic group). I know that it would be too much to expect wealthy Pakistanis to give up consuming sugar, but at least the educated middle-class can boycott it and force the hoarders to release their stocks.

Laws need to be implemented otherwise no use……..Fair trade law……..I haven’t heard about it but this sugar crisis is fake for sure only hoarding and Mafia of mill owners and ministries involved in it. NO PROTECTION FOR CONSUMER AND HIS RIGHTS…….

Hamid, don’t you have “fair trade” laws that protect consumers from excess profiteering and artificial shortages like this, for such staples as milk, sugar, salt, bread, etc.?
