Sensational speech by Dr. Abdul Kalam

YOU say that our government is inefficient.

YOU say that our laws are too old.

YOU say that the municipality does not pick up garbage.

YOU say that the phones don’t work, the railways are a joke, the airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination.

YOU say that our country has been fed to dogs and is in absolute pits.

YOU say, say and say.

What do YOU do about it? Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name – YOURS. Give him a face – YOURS. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your international best. In Singapore, you don’t throw cigarette butts on the road or eat in stores. YOU are as proud of their underground links as they are. You pay $5 (approx. Rs.60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Peder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU come back to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall, irrespective of your status identity. In Singapore you don’t say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn’t dare eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai. YOU wouldn’t dare go out without your head covered in Jeddah. YOU wouldn’t buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, “see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else.” YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 km/h) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, “Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so’s son. Take your two bucks and get lost.” YOU wouldn’t chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why don’t YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don’t YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston??? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. YOU who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and be an appreciative citizen in an alien country, why can’t you be the same here in India?

Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal commissioner of Bombay, Mr.Tinaikar, had a point to make. “Rich people’s dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place,” he said. “And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels? In America, every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here? He’s right.

We go to polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms.

We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries, but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff that is known not to pass on the service to the public. When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse?

“It’s the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forgo my sons’ rights to a dowry.” So who’s going to change the system?

What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbors, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and You. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families in to a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr. Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away.

Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England. When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.

Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one’s conscience too….I am echoing J.F.Kennedy’s words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians…..

“Ask what we can do for India and do what has to be done to make India what America and other western countries are today”

Lets do what India needs from us.

Forward this article to each Indian for a change instead of sending jokes or junk mails.

Thank you,

Dr. Abdul Kalam

    @momina,

frankly, these are far better words than the kind of words you use in your blog.

    yusha, don’t laugh…

@Confused: A look at your chart:

confusion -> hysteria -> psychosis -> call emergency now!

    @momina,
”Abdul Qadeer Khan is definitely one of the best scientists in the world.”

i see Khan saab madly laughing and crying same time.

momina, it’s ok with us to have a one or two dose of laughing but mixing two dose in one for old man is not good for his health.

by the way, since you have emotionally break khan saab, he is not in position to give message, will you or yusha permit me to address in his name. (pleeeeze, it will be great message in which munir saab will also take part.)

Yusha the poor, confused guy was just trying to prove he has learned some bit from A P J Abdul Kalam.

@Confused: Now it is a good thing to correct but people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

A few of your mistakes: ‘i have became addicted to ‘chworangi’ ‘
‘it’s my daily dose of heartly laughing(?) hearty laughter

Anyway, thank you for giving us another dose of laughter :D. Now, you see when a person is so confused and reads intelligent writing he/she usually has hysteria. The reason for your laughter.

Whoa, look how you start wagging your tail just at the mention of Papa’s (US govt) name!
Abdul Qadeer Khan is definitely one of the best scientists in the world and we all are aware of the cheap game of politics in this world.

Pakistan did not ‘originate’ from India. It separated from India. Certain negative cultural aspects that are found in Pakistan have originated from India.

Calcutta is the hub of black magicians. If one says there are no black magic practices in India I would expect that person to be a relative of a Confused Indian. Confused Indians seem to have another attribute as well-hypocrisy.

Hey, i was thinking we should have a permanent Confused’s Daily Jokes’ Box on chowrangi. For everyone to have a hearty laughter :).

Sir, you are the one providing the daily dose of laughter, by mentioning things like no one is ill treated in India because of cast, colour etc. The caste system actually originated in India. Also, please don’t correct my proper English.

    Regards.

    @ momina,

i have became addict to ‘chworangi’. it’s my daily dose of heartly laughing. so please ask anything other.

and i must confess that i don’t know about persons you have mention but but certainly know about Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan.
wallah, you hit the bulls eye. really, whole world like to listen him, espacially American, only if Pakistan Government let him.

    @ yusha,

“Everything rotten has originated in (correcting : from) India”
seeing the state of Pakistan i agree with you.

”By the way, Dr. Abdul Kalam is also a Muslim.”

    samething i said dear yusha.

repeating again, a predominantly hindu nation does have a muslim president, a sikh prime minister, who are close to their heart.

and Pakistanis know about that too!

on the other hand, a islamic nation does not produce a single muslim (since independence) of Dr. Kalam’s caliber, who can preach Pakistani.

as far as untouchables’ existence. i think you are making a mountain out of mole hill. probably due to hindu society in Pakistan or picture presented to you by your elders. India has progressed from that period, and some minor incident should not be counted.

@confused indian: kindly, stop reading. When has to have some bit of brains to understand what an article is about. You are referring to an article about the reason behind the separation of India and Pakistan (now I feel it must have been due to the sad fact that there are some very confused people in India, who are simply intolerable). Confused dude, the point of that article was very different then what confused conclusion you have come to. Tsk tsk, even after having “luminary who can teach like Dr. Kalam”. Sad.

A few of the Pakistanis that you mustn’t have heard of due to your limited and confused learning.

Abdul Qadeer Khan, Pakistani nuclear scientist
    Riazuddin, Pakistani theoretical physicist
Munir Ahmad Khan, Pakistani nuclear engineer
    Pervez Hoodbhoy, Pakistani nuclear physicist
Abdus Salam, Pakistani theoretical physicist – Nobel Prize in Physics 1979

“in India no body is dump or drag because of cast, cread(here is a typo, i think: spell=creed) or colour”

LOL!! Oh Lord…i really couldn’t stop myself…Confused, whom are you fooling?

You know, Wallah, I was planning to write something related to this topic..let’s see.

Chalte Chalte: keep up with the unintentional humour!

  9. Mohammad Yusha Avatar

India is also the land of black magic and where dowry originated. Everything rotten has originated in India, so don’t point fingers at others.

  10. Mohammad Yusha Avatar

@Confused Indian: You really are confused. I talked about Muslims, not Pakistan. Do you think Muslims don’t exist outside of
Pakistan? If I am not wrong, there are more Muslims in India than there are in Pakistan. Secondly, it comes across as really funny when you say that no one is ill treated because of cast, creed or colour in India. India is the heaven of castes, where India has fallen so low that there exist untouchables. What a shame! By the way, Dr. Abdul Kalam is also a Muslim.
