Pervez Musharraf’s European Tour

Nobody believes that our Generalissimo has gone to a long European tour to just give sweeteners to the international leaders and European Union about the situation in Pakistan. The official version is very childish and stereotypical, when it says that Mr. President has gone on four-nation European visit to improve the image of Pakistan and to dispel the wrong notions about the country in the minds of European leaders and people.

The president said he would seek to present in correct perspective the developments in Pakistan and in the region during his meetings with the leaders of these countries as also in his address to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) meet in Switzerland’s Davos.

Musharraf said that he would also have discussions with Belgian Prime Minister Guy Vehhofstadt, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy on how to consolidate further bilateral co operations with these countries.

Europeans are more informed than us, and they know what’s going on. The images of rioting, flour crisis, power crisis, protest of lawyers, assassination of Benazir Bhutto are enough for them to make whatever concepts they want to make, and they basically arent that much enthusiastic about the democracy and the image of Pakistan, they are just worried and apprehensive about their own interests and that is what international politics and relations are all about. And our president knows that and we know that.

So what could be the purpose of Mr. Musharraf going abroad at this critical situation in Pakistan? Some other prominent figures like PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif is also in London, and the closest aide of President Musharraf, one Brig. Niaz is also in UK. So whats’ cooking underneath?
