NRO declared Null and Void by Supreme Court of Pakistan

nro-pakistan1.jpgJust like people eagerly wait for the moon sighting announcement before Eid, people in Pakistan were glued to their TV sets since 4:30 pm as Supreme Court of Pakistan was about to announce the decision on NRO cases. Court’s decision was delayed for almost 7 hours due to consultation between judges of full court inside the committee room after the hearing of the case while public desperately awaited the outcome.

Controversial National Reconciliation Ordinance NRO, the deal which was announced two years ago by then-president Pervez Musharraf, allowed Zardari and Benazir Bhutto, his wife, to return from self-exile without facing corruption charges. But the NRO has been branded unconstitutional and the debate over its legitimacy has received a great deal of coverage in media. The amnesty provided cover to more than 8,000 cases and civil rights activists argued that it was unjust to help so many escape prosecution for alleged wrongdoing.

Finally full bench of Supreme Court has declared NRO Null and Void and in contravention of constitution. SC also ordered to revive & re-open cases of beneficiaries of the black ordinance. Swiss cases against President Zardari are also to be reopened.

The ruling paves the way for further challenges to President Asif Ali Zardari’s already shaky rule. It also causes political turbulence just as the U.S. wants Islamabad to step up its fight against Taliban militants.

As president, Mr. Zardari enjoys general immunity from prosecution under article 248. But the ruling leaves others, including Cabinet ministers loyal to Mr. Zardari, facing reopened corruption and other criminal cases. That prospect is sure to weaken the President, who is unpopular and under pressure to give up much of his power.

Please include various military generals in the list of law breakers because all coups are unlawful and unconstitutional no matter how corrupt the elected government. Same goes for those who refused to accept the election victory of Mujib ur Rahmanand caused break up of the country

another sign that Pakistan is in the rite track. I think the media needs to reflect this as much as possible so that people get a sense of liberal values and moderate views which can in turn discourage the extremists who are trying to break our country.

zardari, rehman malik –all of them; they are sitting lame DUCKS

thank God for some sanity….NRO means that everyone sits at a table, acknowledges everyone has broken laws –and attempts to white-wash everything

    no sir, not anymore….

Our children and younger generations must know that for every wrong you commit — you must be punished. No matter who you are or how much money in your bank account —you are never above the law

then again, South Africa saw corrupt fascists and liberals reconcile for the sake of the country

it goes both ways….but enough is Goddam enough. Time to put a lid on this corrupt culture

time for major over-haul and revolution in Pakistan.

    God bless Pakistan.

@ Samina: you’re probably one of the few dozen people in the country who think Zardari is innocent. Do you know that both husband and wife were given suspended sentences by the Swiss courts and also fined US $ 50,000? Why did Zardari never agree to restore the Chief Justice? It’s clear that he knew his presidency wouldn’t last long if the country had an independent judiciary.

Accountability, allegations and vilified campaigns are not new for the Pakistan peoples party, PPP is facing all this since its foundation. Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was hung by the same pundits of Judiciary, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed faced fabricated cases though his life but Judiciary was not yet satisfied; now the next target is President Zardari. Once against it seems the Judiciary is heading towards another judicial murder but this time it would not be easy. The decision of Judiciary on NRO is quite clear and the aims behind this decision are also not hidden but this time any attempt to undermine Pakistan peoples party would certainly undermine the Pakistan. It would not be easy to handle this blunder; its repercussions would be long lasting. No one can contradict with the verdict of honorable Chief Justice, but I don’t think it was a wise decision at the time when Pakistan is surrounded in a quagmire of issues. It might be not a problem for Zardari who is facing these politically motivated cases sine 11 years but it would badly affect Pakistan and atmosphere of reconciliation.
