Die-hard fundamentalists in Pakistan should be delighted to hear that more and more Indian colleges are banning jeans and mobile phones for girls. The latest move is by colleges in Kanpur where the authorities have imposed a dress code for girl students to prevent them from being harassed by male students. According to Times of India, an angry female student said, ‘‘The decision taken by the college authorities is ludicrous. If they want to check eve-teasing, they must approach the police and not punish the girls.’’ Another student said, ‘‘I can understand a ban short skirts and tank tops, but jeans?’’
The way things are going, it looks like soon Indian girls will be banned from going out of their houses without being accompanied by close male relatives, like brothers or uncles (like in some parts of Pakistan as well as in the whole of Saudi Arabia). Who knows, the authorities may even make it compulsory for Indian girls to wear burqas!
