Last few days have definitely become a part of our history. Yes, I am referring to the events which led to the endorsement of Shariat for Swat under TTP by the Parliment and the President.
On this same platform, I in my recent post advocated that the government should, in any case, accept the deal, which guarentees an end to the voilence griiping the entire country. The recent episode saw many twist, where on many occasion the progress was hanging by the wire.
First it was the President, who created ripples that he is yet to endorse this idea. It was followed by Maulana Sufi Mohammad, walking away from the deal, after accusing the government. Lately, the Taliban came out with direct warnings. In any case, they say “All is well, when it ends well”
The parliment agreed to the deal, which was later signed by the President. Having said this, there is a strong wave of criticism, both from within and outside, regarding the deal. The concerns are totally genuie, I agree. Of course the TTP has its hands covered with blood, the Human Rights abuses is right infront of us and above all there real intentions after this deal does cast many fears.
I am in no way advocating TTP or the deal, as I myself have very serious reservations. But in my mind, I am clear about certain facts which are as follows.
a. Firstly, Swat’s future cannot be decided while sitting either in Punjab or Sindh. Rather its the people of Swat who will decide. This is a clear reality that the people offered these forces ultimate support. I say this because they survived for 2 years an all out army operation. Guerilla warfare without any public support, is out of question.
b. Shariah- Shariah- Shariah. Thats there demand, fine. Well, logically the establishment has only implemented, what was promised in 1994 and 1997. Yes, on both occasion it was approved that in Swat, the entire law& order will be on this pattern. So there is nothing lost at all.
c. Army was demoralised, not because it couldnt fight. Its very tough to fight your own people, yet our forces did there best. What demoralised them was the fact, that most of the opponents of the current deal, were seen on the TV screen 2 years back, claimimg that a bloodshed was taking place, and this action should be stopped. So a renewed military action under the same agenda must have been disastrous.
d. Well, this is our internal issues, and we are concerned with Pakistan first. If this deal can bring peace in our homeland, we have to ignore what the rest say, I mean we understand the ground situation, because we go through it every day. The Americans did the same kind of a deal with Mehdi Militia ( Muqtada al Sadr) in Iraq and Britain did it with IRA.
To wrap up, I must say that we have sucessfully thrown the ball back into there court. I say this, that the establishment, ignored all the facts and went ahead. If the TTP now fails to deliver, than it will be a “JUST WAR” that our arm forces will carry out, and they will also understand what we mean by the word ” writ of the state”. For the time being, all we need is to have faith that thing setle down in the right manner, and my homeland Pakistan remains the castle of our dreams,
Ameen.
