My name is Khan – Oh, is it?

Shah Rukh Khan detained on US airport

Not being recognized is a problem Shah Rukh Khan does not encounter very often. On Saturday, however, the 43-year-old Bollywood star, who was on his way to an Independence Day function in Chicago, was detained for close to two hours by immigration authorities at Newark Airport in New Jersey, USA.

Khan said he found the incident “a little embarrassing.”

Khan was waiting for his bags when security officials asked him to accompany them. “I thought it was nice of them to take me to another room,” he said. “But apparently that was a second check. I had my papers in order…I was taken aback.”

Khan said he chose not to say too much to the officials “because I am little worried about Americans as they do have this issue when your name is Islamic.”

“I will take the first flight back to India once my work here is finished,” he added.

The actor was interrogated, his bags checked and he was asked to give names and phone numbers of people he knew in the US. He was not allowed any calls till the interrogation ended. Khan then called the Indian consulate, who secured his release.

Shah Rukh Khan has just finished shooting in the US for his next film, which is about a Muslim man who is subjected to racial profiling in the US. The film is called My name is Khan. The star’s detention has upset his fans, Bollywood and the Indian government. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni suggested an equal and opposite reaction towards Americans visiting India. “I am of the opinion that the way we are frisked, for example I too was frisked, we should do the same to them,” PTI quoted Soni as saying.

India has formally taken up the matter with the US, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said in Delhi. US Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer issued a statement saying, “We are trying to ascertain the facts of the case, to understand what took place. Shah Rukh Khan, the actor and global icon, is a very welcome guest in the US. Many Americans love his films.”

@Mohamed: Now you’re talking! Communication is key, empathy the touchstone, the stuff of the universe our tools, and faith, hope, patience and imagination (combined with a lot of diligent work) our saving graces. Together we have all the parts, and only together can we put the puzzle together, and Paradise will be our reward. Imagine.

@Momina: Gimme five, Catgirl! Here’s five for you: 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 (Was that five? Whatever. Say, do you think they have kittens in Paradise? I bet they do.)

@James, Thanks for your help. A couple of generations if fine! We can wait. For us Muslims what’s most important is that some among you wish well, we survive with that. However, your estimate should start from the point following is accomplished among others:
    – fixing the energy crisis
    – gaining freedom from Israeli lobbies and their political influence
    – reviving impotent international institutions like UN
    – build a world order that doesn’t just serve power groups
    – figure-out an accountability system that is genuinely responsible and is fair for some higher purpose to all people

Until then we’ll just share smileys.

Just venting out a little steam, nothing directed at you personally.

@Momina: I think it was probably a real detention, but he was instantly aware that the publicity wouldn’t hurt his upcoming project at all; he knew he was valid and it would be little more than an inconvenience, and I bet the security guard was abashed when he found out who he had.

It may take another generation or two for MiddleEast and West to normalize better, but we will. I think you will see vast changes in attitudes and circumstances–for the better– in your time. WE are helping, right here, right now. 🙂

Even if this is a publicity stunt, it doesn’t change the fact that Westerners are paranoid, and to cover up for their faults, they lie. SRK was clearly told that he was being held because his name flashed on the screen, and now they have issued an apology stating (read lying) that it was due to his missing baggage.

Could be a publicity stunt but if not Americans had to change their behavior towards Muslims.

Aamir Khan and Irfan Khan have also been interrogated before, among others, but this particular news spread like wildfire. It does look like a publicity stunt.

About this incident…why do I feel it was part of the publicity stunt for the upcoming movie “My Name is Khan”?

Or maybe I am just a bit too critical…
