Junaid Jamshed criticized by leading Ulema for endorsement of Lays Chips

According to a report in the Urdu daily “Ummat” of 29 June 2009, leading scholars have criticized Junaid Jamshed for declaring Lays chips as “halal”.

Mufti Naeem of Jamaa-e-Binnoria (SITE, Karachi), Mufti Muneebur Rahman (Chairman, Ruet-Hilal Committee), Mufti Abu Bakr (Jaamia Clifton, Karachi) and Mufti Abdul Momin Bangash have declared that having a beard does not make a man an Islamic scholar and Junaid Jamshed (who has not been trained in a madressah) has no knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence.

According to a letter in “The News”, Junaid Jamshed advised students not to study science and technology but to devote all their time to study Islam.

Shakir – in support of your point:

Why UAE? let us take Pakistan. If workers making Lays in Pakistan are non-Muslims then would it be treated as haram? In that case would any restaurant or any food produced by non-Muslims Pakistanis is treated as haram too? Should such products places avoided by people?

“Lays is produced in Pakistan by MUSLIM employees…”. This opens a Pandora’s box. What about Muslims in the UAE eating in restaurants, where the cooks and waiters are non-Muslims? Will they have to go only to those eating places where only Muslims are employed?

In return the brand responded with some positive marketing in various publications and sms. I came across a group on facebook “Lays is 100% Halal”. Their message is simple and clear:

“Lays is produced in Pakistan by MUSLIM employees who make the potato chips in VEGETABLE OIL. The company has confirmed that E631 used in Lays is obtained from Cassava PLANT and is CERTIFIED by CENTRAL ISLAMIC COMMITTEE AND JAMIA ASHRAFIA as 100% HALAL. Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR), an established Government body has also verified that Lays contains ONLY Vegetable Oils. See “HALAL” seal on its pack. Inform our Muslim brothers who are misinformed. WassalamLays is produced in Pakistan by MUSLIM employees who make the potato chips in VEGETABLE OIL. I am not promoting anything here…my only purpose was to share the news and the response. People can still believe whatever they want to believe. But I would just say that it does make a huge difference when you look at the source of the information because at the end of the day that does draw a completely different picture. A reliable source is what we must look out for. And just bear in mind that statements are passed all the time but if the statements are not supported by substantial truth and facts, it’s just a matter of time and all is forgotten.

Lays people picked out a pop figure to trumpet their brand and boost their sales. All else is everyone’s view point. I would like to see the stats how much did the sale soar after this ad.

We are all molvis and muftis:) Moghuls as well since we are eager to punish who are having opposing view points!! we have a our own priority and convenience driven practicing Islam. Some refuse to pray since Allah Azzujell name heaves in their breasts and breathing itself is form of ibadah 24/7. Some drink liquor but don’t take bribe or harm anyone. Some take bribes but don’t hang pictures on wall so on and so forth. If you ask me its ALL PATHETIC! A twisted view of a great religion who meant to reform society and not to make it more monkey likes!

James, US$ 0.80 per pound is equivalent to Rs. 65 per pound or Rs 143 per Kg. Yesterday my wife bought potatoes for Rs. 30 per Kg.

Too many potato chips, if cooked in animal fat, will give you a cholesterol problem.

Making potato chips is a great way to sell potatoes for $6 per pound, as opposed to $.80, the going rate in US grocery stores (at least in my area.) What’s that in rupees?

What has happened to our country’s MUFTIs ?
These people have no authority to criticize one of the greatest personalities of Pakistan.
Apart from being an exceptionally great musician and singer, Junaid Jamshed is a very polite, caring and great human as well.
Not only in the LAYS issue, Junaid Jamshed has been critized by
by some people in various ways, like “he likes to be on stage, before, through singing, and now by naats” and ” he has disgraced music by saying that music is GUMRAAHI “. And even some mad
people say “junaid jamshed is not on the reight path, as he is from DYOBAND FIRQA”.

I remember a story, and would like to tell you all.

Once there lived a joint community of SIKHS and MUSLIMS in a town, the Muslims and Sikhs had very friendly relationships and interactions with others. The Muslims used to buy things from the Sikhs’ shops etc.
One day a Sikh turned MUSLIM!! And all were amazed.
The man who preached Islam to him was from the firqa different from the majority of the Muslims in that town.
When the Muslims came to know that the New Muslim was from the other firqa, they became rude to him, and no one used to talk to him the right way, the Muslim shopkeepers finished their relations with that man. And even they started to hate him!
All because he was from a different firqa???
The New Muslim thought that he was better a Sikh than a Muslim, he ended up his Islam, and returned to the previous Sikh religion. Now all were happy with him, the Sikhs and Muslims became frank and good with him again…..!!

Exactly such a case is with our people, don’t the people think that when a great singer with bright future throwing away his career turns 180, should he be criticized or greeted & congratulated?

I pray that may Allah show us all, the right way.

The issue is not whether Lays is “haram” or “halal”. The issue is whether Junaid Jamshed (who acts as if he’s a great Islamic scholar) is qualified to declare that it is “halal” and that too in a TV commercial (for which he was undoubtedly paid by the sponsors).

frankly the discussion about Lays is quite silly and irrelevant. however the issue about Islam and education…hmm…some people simply love to create their own views based on thin air about all matters…post coming up insha’Allah
