Is masturbation bad?

I’m writing this post in response to someone claiming in this blog that masturbation is very bad for the mind and the body. He has quoted a physician of the ancient Greek system still prevalent all over the country (known as the unani system), which is popular because it is cheap and doesn’t require any surgery for a cure (if there is a cure).

Actually, it has been observed that masturbation is prevalent among man’s nearest biological cousins (the great apes). But the question is, why would a normal man want to indulge in masturbation if he had a woman to satisfy his lust? That’s the problem.

Until fifty years back, men married at a relatively young age, in fact I had two class fellows in college (in the nineteen sixties), both around twenty, who were married and had two children each. As men went in for higher education, they gradually began marrying later in life (I know a few who married after the age of thirty). So the practice of masturbation among men became very common.

Of course, there was a feeling of guilt, but only among those who hadn’t read on the subject. Those who felt guilty about it did so because the mullah in the mosque told them it was a heinous sin. But then, the mullah never had a problem with satisfying his lust. If he didn’t have a wife, he always had young students for satisfying himself (there have been several documented cases of mullahs raping young boys and girls). Moreover, psychiatrists agree that masturbation isn’t bad at all; in fact, it is better than going to a prostitute and risk getting syphilis or AIDS. As for the supposed ill effects on the mind and body, the generation that indulged in masturbation owing to late marriages has not displayed any abnormal behavior or ill-health (except in a few cases). In fact, sometimes it seems that those who have never masturbated are the ones who are sick and need psychiatric treatment!

Mr. Yusha, can you quote some study (done in a western country or even India/Japan/China) which proves that the effects of masturbation are very bad? Mind you, it should be a scientific survey, giving figures about how many people became blind or mad, etc.

This comment comes from a woman.

The world would be a VERY dangerous place if men did not have the ability to masturbate. It is a natrual, biological, urge that should be released. It is energy in your body and nobody should be called sick or wrong for wanting to do so.

It is BALANCE that is needed.

Not excessiveness. Someone who is constantly thinking of sex, seeing every DIVINE woman as an object for sex, and who is imaging in daily life when the next time he can get himself off is the person who has a problem. In these cases, the desires should then be curbed.

Eventually, everyone should try to get to a place where you SURPASS such sexual urges. Men AND women. This is the ascension into God-hood. Celibacy is something all humans should eventually strive for. But the process of getting there should be accepted and embraced, and this includes masturbation.

Sadly, in third world contries you are very repressed in this area. No westerner sees masturbation as bad…even the most devout religious people.

Addict? I’m not an addict.” I just struggle with this stuff a little”. As with any other additive behavior, coming to the realization of your issue is the first and sometimes the most difficult step.

Perhaps it is time we began to look at this issue a bit differently. If you indulge in masturbation, you have already opened the door and invited devastation. You now stand atop a slippery slope. The downward fall is inevitable.

One of the most humiliating problems that the constant male masturbator suffers from when he attempts to have a sexual relationship is premature ejaculation and/or the failure to maintain an erection.

Came across chowrangi looking for commentary on the happenings on Pakistan, but was amused to see that we are preoccupied by jerking off, and being jerked around. Lol.
To dismiss someone who mauterbates as being sick is one thing but dont shoot the messenger. This is merely a discussion borne out of a query whether masturbation is bad? Scratching you privates in public is bad! Two men holding hands in public is bad! Corruption is bad! If someone wishes to practice “Self Love” in the privacy of his home, I say let him or her be. We have bigger problems “at hand” than a handjob. you guys crack me. Carry on spreading the good word. I will be logging on more often to check up on such discussions.

But You know what, Blogging is something common and easily accessible to all – regardless of gender. I appreciate when u say we – Muslims specially must be broad-minded, but this widening thought must not murder over moral values and ethics. A father would never be happy to see her daughter reading the sexual articles.

    Dear Lakhani,
I’m 100% agree with the points you unvield in it, Actually , I learnt a lots on this topic through Internet,Many forigners doctors are of the view that it has nothing to do with nay hamrs with sexual health, more over it is quite a natural thing to burst out the sexual desire it , it is the safest and easoest way to quench the thirst of sexual hunger. I dnt think if some one eclaims to be noraml male and coudnt indulge in it , it is just to say I feel hunger but avaid eating.

In a society like Pak, where quckery is very common such nonsense thoughts are prevailing in the minds of youth with such wall chawking , highlighting the men of the wrong doings of teen age, I guess it is more then a medical by birth probelums rather then due to teen age jerkings.

I appreciate and applause the forms where sexual health is discuss. please keep it up.

Thanks, Altaf, for saying I’m not sick. But I don’t agree wih you when you say we shouldn’t write about the subject. My generation was much more open than the one that followed. We were not influenced by those who claimed to be the guardians of Islam. If you read the Hadith, you will find things there which the mullahs conceal from you. The earliest Muslims were much more broad-minded than the ones living today!

YOU ARE NOT SICK ! 🙂
You are very much right… Its only the case with those who are deprived of their marital life… or are too delayed in it. But I would rather request you not to post these topics as they may serve as a source of encouragement for those desperate souls who have been resisting masturbation at all. Also, it comes under the immoral acts and we would never allow our youth to act immorally.
