Undoubtedly the most famous Cephalopod, Paul the psychic octopus, the hero of 2010 FIFA world cup has died today at his home at the Oberhausen Sea Life Center in Germany. Paul was actually born in Weymouth and moved from the town’s Sea Life Park in 2006. He isn’t the first thing to die in a tank in Germany but what made Paul a celebrity is the prophecy of crunch football games during world cup. Paul had become a sensation overnight in media.
The predictive powers of two years and 10 month old Octopus were amazing though were only supply led. When two tanks of food were lowered into his tank with the flags of playing teams, Paul picks his favorite by pawing with his tentacles around. Paul has a 100 per cent success rate for all five of Germany’s fixtures during World Cup 2010, including their 1-0 defeat to Serbia. Paul “retired†after his perfect record last summer, with his keepers saying he wanted to get back to his primary job of making kids laugh behind the glass of aquarium.
The poor creature also faced “death threats†from German and Argentinean fans who wanted to have dinner of Paul after his correct predictions of their team’s defeat.
Putting his successful career to an end, his final prediction was that England would win the right to host the World Cup in 2018. Paul will achieve lucrative immortality in money-making enterprises ranging from special clothing lines to a mobile phone application, and will feature in a documentary to be released early next year.
