Boycott Riddle

Once again Musharraf’s un-declared apparatchik Fazlur Rehman and the dealt lady politician Benazir Bhutto are busy like hell in muddying the already murky waters of national politics. Whereas All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM), which has got the popular support, is going towards the boycott of election 2008.

What the nation wants? Nation wants that nobody should contest the election in the emergency, under the supervision of this sham care-taker setup, when judges of honor are still out of their courts, when the election commission is not neutral. Nation simply doesn’t want eyewash and yet another Musharraf’s referendum like elections, in which PML-Q would come as a victor along with the likes of Fazlur Rehman and MQM.

Civil society, lawyers, deposed judges, media, and APDM are on the right track when they say and show that they are negotiating with other opposition parties to show unity on some sort of agenda which will ensure the rule of law, end of emergency, end of PCO, reinstatement of the judges, freedom of media and a free and fair election.

Nawaz Sharif is surely playing a positive and pivotal role in bridging the gaps between opposition and he is trying to mend the ways. He is trying to fill up the gaping gaps and he has met with Benazir and apparently convinced her that in unison APDM and ARD would go ahead and render a charter of demand to the government, and if government doesn’t accept that charter of demand, then all the parties would boycott the elections, and in case of their acceptance, a unified decision would be taken.

Judges have scarified and the media has sacrificed. Now its up to the politicians. If the people like Benazir and Fazl just go with the government without getting acceptance of charter of demand, then it would be another demonstration of the notorious doctrine of necessity.

I think the Nation in the past few months has clearly indicated that it is not very enthusiastic about current political scenario, this can be gauged by the lukewarm response to various calls to arms by our not so very creditable political leaders. I think the nation wants this election phase to be over as soon as possible so that they can get on with their lives. They don’t have the stomach to be taken for a ride by our not so honourable champions of democracy. Meantime the so called civil libertarians will continue to raise a storm in a tea cup.

As for Nawaz Sharif, his options are very limited, he has already suffered a major setback during his return1 courtesy his religious alliance, and now after his return2 (conditions of which are not in the public domain) If the King has asked him to not take part in the current elections then the only way to save his face in front of his party is to press for a boycott. This way his party will suffer but he will survive. It was quite evident from the day he landed that taking part in the elections is not an open option for him. However, in order to do that he may need another nod of approval may be he can manage that before it’s too late.
