A Saudi woman demands Polyandry

Years ago, I read about someone asking Imam Abu Hanifa about why a woman was not allowed to have more than one husband. He asked his daughter (Hanifa) and she is reported to have said, “If she has more than one husband, how can anyone explain whose child it is that she has borne?” So the great Imam (who is followed by most Sunni Muslims) explained that this was the reason why Islam forbade a woman to be married to more than one man. Now a Saudi woman in Egypt has asked why polyandry (the custom of women having more than one husband) should not be allowed, since DNA testing is now easily available to determine parenthood.

Most people may not be aware that polyandry has been practiced in many places throughout history. It is still the custom for a woman to have more than one husband in certain parts of Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and even in India. No one knows why the practice originated, although it may have been found necessary in societies where the number of men outnumbered the women. In Pakistan today, for instance, there are 106 men for every 100 women, which means that half a million Pakistani males will never be able to marry (unless they marry men or go to other countries to find marriage partners). In the Middle East (particularly the U.A.E.), the number of men in most countries is much more than the number of women.

What would happen if a mysterious disease struck women only and there would be only one woman for two men? I know that the Abrahamic religions (to which Islam belongs) strictly forbid polyandry. Would the priests, rabbis and mullahs then get together and allow women to have more than one husband?

This article at GulfNews covers more on this.

@Shakir lakhani i know what you are trying to say, since Polyandry in islam is not allwed, Allah has forbidden it then why the heck you people wasting time on such discussion and article? indirectly this shakir lakhani is trying to advocate polyandary and its very apparent from his reply if you people have some brain to understand this guy’s inner evil

@ Tayab: I’m not a religious scholar, but I suppose I would do what everyone else would do, and that would be what the mullahs say.”

what he is saying that if some mullah asks you to accept polyandry then you do because Mullah said it no matter if Allah gives you its permission or not and we know very well that in this society good and bad people prevail so if some fake mullah ask you to drink alcohol then would you? i think shakir lakhani would do that because he gives preference to Mullah over Quranic teaching. i hope my answer is clear . please refrain from such secular people.

@ James: A man named Bhutto has done the greatest damage to our country (not by breaking it into two but by massive nationalization of education and industry). This is why people like Haider are not able to understand simple English. Nowhere have I said that I support polyandry, I only asked what would the scholars say if the number of men reached a point of no return and either those who’re not able to marry kill themselves or become homosexuals. In fact, in those places in Pakistan where there are many more men than women, homosexuality is rampant.

Gentlemen: I don’t believe Shakir is advocating polyandry, but rather addressing a problem and soliciting our ideas.

I consider it very unlikely that a man could remain in love with, or even interested in a woman who had been bedded by another. We’re just not made that way.

Guy’s dont debate this Shakir dude he is a Secular mind pervert, he want to amend the laws of Allah according to his needs and may you suffer you hypocrite, a female having sex with multiple males may fall victom of aids too and also males are strong and they support their family and they earn their living while females are supposed to take care of their household like babies and cooking etc. its illogical for a woman to have more than 1 husbands and females are weak leaders too so they cant support husbans because their decisions are weak while males have the power of taking decisions and can provide support for multiple wives ( 4 wives max) well i can present more and more logical proves but u r just a hypocrite who would not listen so may you rot in hell if u try to distort our islamic society with your filthy mind.

This will be a mistake to follow the crowd or a leader if their actions are against Quran. The right decision would be to follow instructions from Quran. We are too lazy to understand the message ourselves and we rely on others (e.g. mullahs) to interprete it for us. Often he is wrong and would mislead us. Mullahs or anyone else can not change Allah’s order. Haram remains haram and mullah can not declare is hallal.

It is obligatory on every muslim to read (understand) Quran and we have to struggle for it.

    Faky is right.
Shakir, if you live to see that hypothetical situation/time, what will you choose for your mother and sister?

Dear shakir lakhani, Islam is the religion of Allah. We are not the ones to mend the rules or go against the will of God. However if anything unfortunate happens and population of women is not enough to facilitate all the men then its Allah who will bring a solution to that problem aswell.
Allah is the omniscient, his rules are supposed to work all the times. He would never make a rule which would be harmful for our existance. Therefore there is no point in changing or mending rules for our will.
