Why are Sikhs not allowed to eat halal meat?

Years ago, in the book “Bhowani Junction” (which was made into a film and shot in Lahore), I read about Sikhs not being allowed to eat “halal” meat. I thought the writer might have made a mistake, since Sikhs (believing in one God) are closer to Muslims than Hindus. But now I have come across someone else saying the same thing, in fact it is Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the supreme temporal body of the Sikhs. In today’s Times of India, there is an article entitled “Those who trim hair, beard are not true Sikhs: SGPC”,. I have no quarrel with that, since this is the only visible feature of Sikhs which makes them stand out from others.. But then the article says, (and this I cannot understand), “Sikhs should abstain from liquor, cigar and halal meat”.

Of course, what they eat or drink is their own business, but why this ban on halal meat? If there’s a Sikh scholar who’s reading this, I’ll be grateful if he can explain this peculiar tenet for being a true Sikh.

As per Our holy book Shri Guru granth sahib, eating any kind of meat is prohibited for sikhs. Guru ji had mentioned that eating Halal is prohibited for sikhs. But also there is not even a single mesaage in the Guru Granth sahib that sikhs can eat Jhatka meat. The resaon why Guru ji had mentined only about Halaal because at the time of our Gurus, India was under the rule of Mughal Empire and mughals eats Halaal meat. At that time hindu was also prohibited from eating meat. There was no Jhatka word at the time of our gurus. If hindu was not eating the meat and muslims were eating halaal meat then our gurus had to restrict the halaal meat because there was no issue of jhatka. If there had been a jhatka meat at that time then Our Gurus could also restrict the Jhtaka meat beacuse any kind of kiiling wheather halaal or jhatka is against the nature.

The conclusion of this message to sikhs is not to eat any kind of meat because all these animals and human beings are the creation of the nature and we have no rights to kill someone because we are not god.

I would like end this message with the following line from our holy book Sri Guru Granth Sahib:

AWAR E ALLAH NOOR UPAYEA, KUDRAT KE SABH BANDE
EK NOOR TE SABH JAGG UPJEYA, KON BHALE KO MANDE

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI FATEH

I will tell you wht the deal is here, sikhs are not allowed to eat Halal because according to scripture it says killing in any manner without the need for self-defense is wrong, so why mention gods name on it? we can live without meat so….but the scripture also says its ok to eat meat but no halal

some sikhs do eat meat but they are not really supposed to. if a sikh drinks Amrit then they are frobidden to eat meat or cut their hair. (Amrit is a special holy water)

So i dont see how using the Kirpan to quickly chop off the head is any more inhumane than our hilal method?

”slow process of slaughtering used for halal meat is not appreciated by sikhs” — kya maatlab??? Its a slow process? It takes 3-5 seconds max. The animal may make some movements but it is already dead.

It is not the prettiest sight to watch, but rest-assured we are most humane with the animals. Look at the western countries that use bullets, and electic prods!!!

Either way, it is an act of sacrifice. We arent barbarians. We respect the animal and are requesting Allah to accept this sacrifice on our behalf.

and on the topic of meat, consider yourself invited to Pakistan. We have the best meat. Freshly slaughtered and produced. in india to get meat you must go to state-controlled places, and you shouldnt trust the quality of those old aging meats. Not good for the health, too many flies!

    Jai PAK!!

Miss Kaur, Sikhs may not like it, but the Jews do. The “halal”method of slaughtering animals is prescribed in Islam as well as Judaism.

Sikhs do not eat ‘halal’ meat. Sikhs eat ‘jhatka’ meat which means that the animal is slaughtered with one stroke. We believe that this is the most humane way.

Halal meat is prepared by slowly severing the main blood artery of the throat of the animal while reciting verses from the Quran. The slow process of slaughtering used for halal meat is not appreciated by sikhs

i never understand why even non-Muslim wouldnt want hilal meat. It tastes better, is freshly slaughtered (meaning there are no preservatives or other ‘impurities’ added) and is more hygienic.

We dont shoot the animals in the head or electrocute them the way the Americans do for their McDonalds fast-food quality ‘meat’

As for Sikh, as far as i know they are allowed to eat meat. Halal meat i dont know. All this talk of meat is making me very hungry.

    Please excuse me.

Of course Sikhs are allowed meat. Even most Hindus are allowed (except beef).

The Islamic way of slaughtering is much more hygienic as most of the blood containing germs and bacteria is eliminated which can cause several diseases. Meat slaughtered by the Islamic method also remains fresh for a longer time due to deficiency of blood in the meat compared to other methods of slaughtering.

Are Sikhs allowed to eat meat at all? I know Hindus are not.
