Why are Muslims so cruel to animals?

Why are Muslims so cruel to animals? What does a Muslim do when he sees a dog? He picks up a stone and throws it at the poor creature. I once owned a salt works in the coastal area of Karachi. There was plenty of wild life there in 1978, but a few years later, most of it had disappeared. I remember large lizards (more than three feet in length) and colored snakes, all which had been wiped out by humans before 1991 (when I left the salt trade).

One day I came across a worker trying to kill a chameleon. “Why do you want to kill it? What harm has he done to you?” I asked. “Why does he keep changing colors?” the man retorted. I managed to convince him not to kill the poor creature, but I know that the minute I left the place, he went ahead and killed it anyway. Back in 2003, when I went to live in Block 5 of Clifton, a couple of dogs in the street outside the apartment complex became very friendly with me. They would accompany us whenever I and my wife went for a walk. Maybe they thought I cared about animals because apparently I was the only one who hadn’t tried to hit them with stones. The watchmen at the gate would be appalled when they saw me petting the dogs (who, according to their primitive way of thinking, are unclean creatures). A few days later, the dogs disappeared. Someone had shot the dogs, said the guards. I am fairly certain it was one of them.

I know there is a Hadith about angels staying away from houses where dogs are kept, but no one knew this when I was growing up. We had a couple of dogs, as well as exotic birds and peacocks (which we kept in a large cage). And I knew many other families who also kept dogs as pets. I have also heard another Hadith about a prostitute going straight to heaven because she fed a hungry dog, but apparently this one is ignored by Muslims. In Saudi Arabia, the only dog I saw was one being taken for a walk by an American (in Jeddah). In practically all countries where Muslims live, no one cares for animals.

Lizards inside the home is not uncommon in Pakistan. They dont bother anyone as they are often high up on the walls and out of reach.

They are good because they kill unwanted insects, like flies and other creatures. But yes, they are dirty and poisonous if touched by the hand.

Mr Hend, you mentioned Why animals, are we nice to even our women? Are you pretending to be a Muslim to throw dirt on Islam? Maybe you can clarify what you meant by we. I will let you know of numerous Ahadith where Muslims are told to be kind to animals, but after the clarification. I’m sure a gentleman like you will not have a problem with that.

    Regards.

@Mr. Lakhani: You should read my post Is this love of Animals? Locking an animal on the pretext of saving it from predators is a poor excuse. And yes, keeping animals in the zoo is cruelty. If you have locked animals in cages in your own house, then I guess you are right about the title, although you do end up sounding like a hypocrite when I read your post. As they say in Urdu, look in your own girebaan.

Momina’s previous comment about killing lizards is very impressive. I hope it clears all doubts in your mind as to why people kill lizards. I would not want those disgusting, filthy, poisonous creatures in my house, although you may want them in yours, as you are a weirdo, although I’m sure you must have felt like changing your mind a few times after hearing your female family members shrieking when they saw one.

Muslims are cruel by nature to animals and other humans so it is not a surprise. Islam does not preach peace or not hurting other animals like Budhhism or Hinduism do.

The practice of Qorbaneh itself is advocating sacrifice of animal and the process of Halal is not easy on the animal to say the least.

Why animals, are we nice to even our women? Think about it while our people are busy blowing up each other.

Ok i have to type this again. all vanished.

I mentioned some ahadith that are verifiable in my previous comment. you may ask any ‘aalim about it.
It is narrated by al_Bukhaari, Muslim (steudent of al-Bukhaari), An-Nasai and Ibn Majah.

I thought the story about Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w. was well-known.

as for the lizard’s meat that may be eaten…that is the large on (3 feet etc you mentioned.)

It was reported that once Muhammad s.a.w.w. was having meal with other Sahaba r.a. when he was served the meat of the lizard. he said to take it away from his sight. Khalid ibn Waleed
r.a. asked him if it was haraam. He (s.a.w.w.) said that it is not haraam but he did not like its meat.

Neither do i. that is a matter of choice. i cannot bear the sight of shrimps and prawns as well. others love to eat it. some people don’t like chicken meat others dont like beef and so on.

Momina, those stories about lizards betraying the prophets, are they verfiable or just made up by people? Have you come across these stories in Bukhari, for instance?

  8. Shakir Lakhani Avatar

General, I think Momina has already answered your query about who were the illustrious ones that were betrayed by lizards.

@ Momina: someone once told me a hadith about eating lizards being allowed. Have you come across it?

i remember when I was just 12, the maid had just made me Maggi Soup as I was a big fan. Just by chance I was stirring it in the bowl and i noticed a dead lizard (it had probably fallen from the wall in the kitchen into the soup)

if i ate it i probably would have died…..just a few days earlier there was a case of 4 people who died of poisoning because a lizard had somehow gotten into a deg of biryani.

    true story.
