One year has passed since President General (r) Pervez Musharraf sent judiciary packing. Since then lots of water has passed under the bridges. Judges were restored and then sacked again. Lawyers movement gained momentum with every passing day. Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif came back, and we also saw the Martial Law 2.0 which brought the gifts of PCO and emergency. Benazir Bhutto was assassinated and bombers rocked the country, and amidst all of this lawyers kept stuck to their noble resolve and they kept on challenging the status quo and tyranny.
Their struggle brought the change on the election day on 18th February, and nation woke up from its slumber on ballot day due to the resolve of these daring lawyers. Many names are worth gold in this regard including Aitzaz Ahsan, Munir A. Malik, Ali Ahmad Kurd, Justice (r) Tariq and more than one hundred thousands lawyers throughout Pakistan.
After one year passing of this movement, lawyers’ resolve is unhindered and they are all set to fight for the reinstatement of judiciary no matter what. They are giving time to the new parliament and right now observing the Black Flag Week against the measures taken by President Musharraf.
The newly elected parliament cannot and must not ignore the sacrifices and struggle of lawyers.
