Bloodbath in Rawalpindi as Ashura Procession went rogue

Ashura procession in Rawalpindi turned into a bloodbath after a clash between Shias and Sunnis near Fawara Chowk, Raja Bazar. Reportedly, a mosque, seminary and more than 100 shops at Madina Cloth Market were gutted. Unconfirmed reports suggest more than 30 deaths, including slit throats and smashed heads of seminary students.

Mainstream media showed an extraordinary restraint over the incident and blocked all coverage except giving away few tickers. Same media that go crazy over gas cylinder blasts, was mute over Rawalpindi carnage.

The censorship led to speculations and rumor mills started spinning stories and spreading poison through social media.

Some journalists posted few bits and pieces of the horrific incident at their Twitter accounts but later deleted the tweets on recommendation of their seniors.

Newspapers like Express Tribune painted a single side of the story

As Shia muslims massed to mourn, a group of miscreants at 3:00pm reportedly snatched guns from police personnel installed in the area for security, and opened fire.

As panic spread, unknown people set a portion of the cloth market in Raja Bazaar on fire.

The situation soon got out of hand and the army was called in to control the situation.

“The clashes started when a sermon was being delivered from a Sunni mosque on the way of the procession route. The infuriated Shias attacked the mosque and also put a cloth market at fire,” police official Waseem Ahmed claimed.

Curfew is imposed in parts of Rawalpindi and Army is on the streets.

The unfortunate incident at Fawara Chowk, Raja Bazar shows that Punjab government has failed to perform its duties during Ashura procession. The mismanagement and shortsightedness of the administration caused the loss of so many lives and damage to property.

Shias should be declared non muslims and Moharam processions should be totally banned like in saudi arabia.

Such violent, unnecessary and controversial processions should be banned. They are a threat to public order and peace. Let the Shia celebrate or mourn in their own quarters or places of worship. Enough of this i irrational behavior inconsistent with Islam.
